Original Ending of The Suicide Squad Would’ve Pissed a Lot of Fans Off

James Gunn’ The Suicide Squad killed about 90% of the squad before the opening credits rolled. So going in, you know supervillains (and people in general) in the movie are treated as nothing more than a disposable means to an end.

Then came along Task Force X to steal everyone’s hearts (well, everyone except Peacemaker). So naturally, the audience wants all of these beloved and unlikely relatable characters to survive. But who are we kidding? The name of the film has ‘suicide’ in it.

While talking to Variety back in August, Gunn had mentioned briefly that he originally had plans to kill off Ratcatcher 2,

The original ending that I pitched, one main character died, and one main character did not die. And the main character who died was Ratcatcher 2. She was so sweet, I just felt like it was just too dark. Not that we don’t love Polka-Dot Man. We do. I just couldn’t [kill Ratcatcher 2]. So I relented.

James Gunn

Even if we lost Polka-Dot Man and Rick Flag (again, for the umpteenth time, F you Peacemaker), the viewers were still happy with the ending. Gunn dodged a bullet when he decided on these deaths because his original plan was much more devastating.

Now in a recent interview with CinemaBlend , the director explained just how gruesome her death would have been and explained the premise of it all,

At the very end of the movie, Ratcatcher 2 had taken the information about from Jotunheim. She had smuggled in and gotten away with all of that information from Jotunheim, and the rest of the group didn’t know about it. And (Amanda) Waller blew up her head after they went back to the prison! At which point, Harley tries to talk Bloodsport — Bloodsport’s freaking out because he’s connected to this person, like a daughter.

And he’s freaking out, and Harley is actually being sort of kind, in a weird way, trying to talk Bloodsport into just letting it go. But Bloodsport ends up shooting Waller in the heart with a combustible bullet and threatening to blow her up. It was sort of complicated, but it was something like that. He didn’t shoot her in the heart. He shot her right below the heart with one of the exploding bullets, which we see Peacemaker using earlier in the movie. And so now she has to do what he says.

Although watching Bloodsport have that kind of control over Waller would have been pleasing, the ending that we got was far more superior.

Gunn further elaborated why he took this ending out of his final draft,

It was just too dark for me. It was really just too dark. It didn’t really work for me. It didn’t really tell the story that I wanted to tell, which is much more about the characters’ different journeys, emotionally. And for me, really, the ending with Bloodsport petting the rat… that, to me, was the perfect ending for the movie.

James Gunn

I might have a slightly biased opinion because I like rodents, and I like Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, but this was definitely a better choice.

The film proved to be DCEU’s redemption with its style, aesthetics, the manner of storytelling, and it truly felt like a comic book experience.

The Suicide Squad will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K disc from October 26.
