What is Miles Morales’ age in Across the Spider-Verse?

Sony Pictures Entertainment released the trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Tuesday, leaving fans excited. The film is scheduled to release on June 2, 2023.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse takes place some years after the previous movie and features an older Miles Morales, making the fans wonder what his exact age is.

Miles Morales appears to be 17 years old in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer, evidenced by his muscular physique and a deeper voice. Producer Chris Miller further described him as a teenager during YouTube’s Premium Afterparty video, thus confirming the same.

In the trailer, we see Miles Morales’ (Shameik Moore) mother (Luna Lauren Velez) talking to her son about becoming a man. This is followed by a montage that shows scenes from Into the Spider-Verse as she expresses concern that he won’t take care of himself.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse reunites Miles with Peter B. Parker and Gwen Stacy, who take him back into the multiverse for more adventures as they face the multiverse-traveling villain Spot.

What is the exact timeline of the Spider-Verse movies?

Miles Morales’ age has not been made clear in the trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. However, there are enough clues in the trailer for us to conclude that a considerable amount of time has passed between his first multiverse-saving endeavor and the events of the upcoming sequel.

With a deeper voice and obvious changes in his physique in terms of being more muscular and bulkier, Miles appears to have aged considerably but is still not an adult.

The age description also fits with the apparent gap between the events of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and what happens in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The sequel plans to introduce Peter B. Parker and Mary Jane’s daughter, Mayday, and the fans are already excited!

Miller and Phil Lord revealed a picture of the new character in the Premium Afterparty video, who seems to be around or slightly under a year old.

If Mary Jane’s pregnancy and Mayday’s apparent age are taken into account, there seems to be at least a two-year gap between the two movies. This falls in line with Miles being around 15 in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and 17 in the upcoming sequel.

Significance of Miles Morales’ age in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The Spider-Man movie multiverse has always revolved around the growing-up theme, and this is particularly important for Miles Morales. As we know, he was pushed into the world of superheroes and villains at an age when he was still finding himself, and this created a unique challenge for his personal growth.

Miles’ eagerness to find his path in life and his struggle with the idea of leaving his family behind pose even more complex dilemmas for Miles in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Chris Miller explained, in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Premium Afterparty video:

[Miles] is a teenager. When you are growing up, there’s that feeling [where] you want to see what the world has to offer, and you want to go out there. The push and pull of wanting to stay rooted with your family and then also leave the nest is part of what the movie is about.

What was Miles Morales’ age in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse?

To jog your memory, Miles Morales was 13 years old when he first became Spider-Man, and hence when we first met him in the comics and the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miles was 13.

Miles initially gets chosen in a charter school lottery to attend Brooklyn Visions Academy. Miles was hesitant to join his new school, despite his intelligence and learning ability, because he seemed reluctant to leave his old acquaintances behind and be an outcast in a new environment.

We see Miles meet his teacher Peter Parker for the first time at the same academy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Anchoring the action and grand scale of the Spider-Verse saga is Miles’ struggle to balance his superhero duties with the trials and tribulations of being a teenager.

His conflict was central to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and now Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also poised to place a special focus on his plight. Miles Morales’ moral dilemma is likely to be heightened by Miles’ superhero responsibilities.

Shortly after he became Spider-Man, we saw Miles saving the multiverse, and he’s continued to carry the world on his shoulders since.

Miles’ journey toward balancing his young life and superhero responsibilities could provide Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with emotional gravitas similar to its 2018 predecessor. We have to wait to find out whether it is as entertaining as its predecessor.

Another sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is due in 2024.
