Here’s How Rick Flag and Peacemaker’s Mirrored Helmet Fight Was Shot

Ask anyone, one of the things that make The Suicide Squad such a fun watch is its cinematography. At a fan’s request, director James Gunn explains the iconic scene of Rick Flag’s fight mirrored on Peacemaker’s helmet.

The scene in question is quite an emotionally-charged fight sequence, that ultimately has us say good bye to Flag. Still, the choreography was stunning as it kept us on the edge, wondering how this altercation between Flag and Peacemaker would end. The audience sees part of the fight in the reflection of Peacemaker’s helmet that ends up on the floor.

And it begs the question, how was it filmed?

Gunn keeps it crisp in the 260 characters he’s got. But we’ll explain at length for you: The user asks whether the shot was “practical” or “VFX composite”. Practical refers to a scene being shot organically without the need for added visual effects later.

As suspected, the biggest problem with a practical shot would be that the helmet would also catch the camera’s reflection.

Gunn explains that the fight scene was first shot from the perspective of the (spinning) helmet. Then, the helmet in the main frame was shot at the same speed as the fight clip. Finally, the fight scene was imposed onto the helmet using VFX. Adding to the technical difficulty of the scene is that Gunn and team shot it beautifully while in motion, rather than a static mirrored scene.

The Suicide Squad brought back Task Force X, with fan-favorites like Rick Flag and Harley, alongside newbies, in an attempt of redeeming the franchise. Despite humble numbers on the box office, The Suicide Squad has gathered approval in other spheres, from fans and critics alike, making the movie a roller coaster ride that you need to get on, at least once.

We will be seeing more of Peacemaker and his helmet in the upcoming series, which will be poignant with Gunn’s direction as well. Filming for Peacemaker is already wrapped with a tentative premier scheduled for January 2022.

We will also see more of Gunn in his self-announced last stint with Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Vol 3 in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
