Hugh Dillon, the Executive Producer of the Mayor of Kingstown series, discusses the possibility of the series branching out into different spin-offs and sequels like Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.
The show follows Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner), a former shot caller in the Kingstown prison, as he takes the baton of the Mayor of Kingstown after the murder of his brother.
Kingstown, Michigan, is built on the prison industrial complex, and corruption, crime, and injustice are the order of the day. Season 1 concludes with a big prison riot, making Mike’s job even more challenging.
In an exclusive interview with Dillon, he told Screen Rant that he hasn’t thought of the possibility of spin-offs and is aiming at finishing season 2. However, he has also admitted that Sheridan is capable enough to pivot to other stories inside the same universe.

Right now, we’re just so into season 2 that I can’t really be honest about that. I’m still in post, and we’re just trying to get to the end of it. But I know Taylor [Sheridan], and I know the rest of the family. The thing is, they can pivot and do anything. They just have to be great ideas.Hugh Dillon
Sheridan has proven his incredible ability to manufacture spin-offs out of thin air more than once. Unlike most spin-offs, he tends to lean on the history of the world he has built.
This is proven by the immaculate work with Yellowstone. Sheridan has built an entire universe out of Yellowstone with two prequels, 1883 and 1923, and two spin-offs that are on the way. If Sheridan were to make an entire franchise out of Mayor of Kingstown, he will likely take a similar approach.
The franchise could explore the world at a time when Mitch had all the power or go back further to when Mike’s father became the first ‘Mayor’ of Kingstown.
The multi-layered characters and the complex world that Dillon and Sheridan have built is the perfect gateway for crafting numerous spin-offs.
Another possibility could be showing the origins of the dark side. Sheridan could base a spin-off on how Kingstown became so corrupt, and incarceration became the main form of business.
They can also take a completely different approach and explore the entire story from the perspective of people outside the McLusky family. Sheridan is a master of exploring these avenues.
Mayor of Kingstown could further explore the town’s history through the prisoners’ eyes, highlighting the systematic corruption and inequality that gave birth to unfathomable crime in the city.
Spin-offs are the perfect way to explore the multi-faceted Mecca of crime crafted by Sheridan and Dillon, which has garnered appreciation from critics and fans alike.
