Incredible Hulk Villain Abomination Returns in New Shang-Chi Trailer

Shang-Chi’s latest trailer came with quite the reveal as it saw the return of Incredible Hulk villain Abomination. While the character seems to have gone through significant physical alterations, there’s no doubt about it being Bruce Banner’s former enemy Emil Blonsky.

Much like other Marvel projects, there is a lot of secrecy surrounding Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as well, and despite the second trailer focusing more on the movie’s world building, the final scene came as a shocker to viewers. Check out the trailer here:

As Shang-Chi and Katy watch an underground fighting tournament, they witness the Abomination’s arrival to take on a Master of the Mystic Arts who is none other than Dr. Strange’s friend and ally, Wong.

Although the Abomination’s design has seen considerable change, including new ears, it is unmistakably the same character fans were first introduced to in 2008. However, ahead of the new trailer’s drop, audiences remained ignorant of his cameo.

Furthermore, whether actor Tim Roth is reprising his role to play the Abomination remains unknown, too. Still, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise if a stunt performer replaces him to portray the villain via motion-capture performance. Following the surprise reveal, the big questions hanging are why is Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and what role could he play.

Given the unveil, it’s probably safe to assume the character has been merely brought back for a cameo, with the brief tease being just a glimpse of it. Since Abomination hasn’t been active in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over ten years, it doesn’t make much sense for him to hold a significant role in a movie like Shang-Chi.

Instead, his appearance could likely be a setup for Roth’s return in Marvel’s other project, She-Hulk, set to be released on Disney+ in 2022. It was confirmed last year that Abomination would serve as the upcoming show’s main villain for the first season.

Thus, at the very least, the villain’s long absence in past films could be addressed through his appearance in Shang-Chi. Regardless of his placement, it will definitely be interesting to see how the Abomination is navigated through the plot of the upcoming movie and whether Shang-Chi actually gets to battle him or not. Until then, stay tuned!
