Here’s Why Fantastic Beasts 3 Had a Poor Opening Weekend Overseas

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third installment in the Harry Potter reboot that follows Albus Dumbledore through his younger years, has failed to make an impressive mark overseas.

Ahead of the film’s US release, its international box office collection over the weekend made $58 million across 22 countries.

This number is a significant drop compared to its predecessor, 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which collected $191 million during its opening weekend overseas.

The biggest opening for The Secrets of Dumbledore so far is China with $10 million, which is still quite the drop compared to its predecessor’s $36 million debut. Other top markets include Germany with $9.4 million, Japan with $8.6 million, the United Kingdom with $8 million, and Australia with $3.9 million.

Various factors weigh in when considering why the film has such a massive gap from its predecessor.

The Crimes of Grindelwald opened in 79 countries when it debuted, whereas it would be hard to decide the audience’s definitive reception of The Secrets of Dumbledore until it debuts in 44 other markets next weekend, including France, Italy, Korea, Brazil, North America, and Mexico.

In addition to this, the pandemic might’ve affected the film’s box office collection. Other aspects that may or may not affect it further are people who are reluctant to watch the movie because of J.K. Rowling’s controversies or Johnny Depp being replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

Directed by David Yates, the script for The Secrets of Dumbledore was penned by Rowling, who co-wrote with Steve Kloves.

Although the prequel story’s first film, 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was able to grapple the fans’ attention, the follow-up was quite a let-down. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them garnered over $800 million globally, with The Crimes of Grindelwald dipping to $654 million worldwide.

It remains to be seen whether the third film revives the fans’ interest in the franchise or makes the anticipation for a fourth film even more insignificant.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore opens in cinemas in the US on April 15, 2022.
