Tyrese Gibson Says Morbius Is MCU Canon, Sony Clarifies

As Morbius gears up for its cinematic release on January 28, 2022, Sony makes a statement saying that the film is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but rather of Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel characters. This comes in response to actor Tyrese Gibson’s hints of Morbius having direct ties to MCU.

Sony Pictures Releasing holds the rights to Spider-Man and other Marvel Comics properties related to the webbed superhero including Venom and Morbius. These make up Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel characterswhich stays independent of the MCU, unless a deal is struck.

In 2015, Sony and Marvel entered an agreement, announcing that the latter will be creating a revamped Spider-Man which will be integrated within the MCU, with Sony still bearing rights and distribution.

Although the deal had complications of its own, it still allowed Spider-Man to swing in and out of several MCU movies. Many were under the misconception (or perhaps, hoped!) that the same opportunities lied for other Sony-owned Marvel characters.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, it seems as if actor Tyrese Gibson (who plays Simon Stroud in the upcoming Morbius) is under the same impression. When asked if Morbius is part of the MCU, Gibson’s response was clear – “Yes.”

Additionally Gibson also revealed another delay in the release, that would put Morbius in cinemas only in October, 2022.

They just pushed [Morbius] to October because they want to take advantage of that Halloween energy, so it’s going to be a long year, man, of a lot of magic happening out here.

Understandably, fans were confused and well, a little excited at the possibility of another crossover. However, one couldn’t miss the obvious – even Spider-Man was only allowed to enter the MCU only through various deals. It did not help that only recently Sanford Panitch (president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group) commented on how Sony and Marvel could be connected via the multiverse – which had fuelled fans’ anticipation of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appearing in Spider Man: No Way Home.

Could this mean that Morbius is indeed part of the MCU?

Jared Leto in Morbius

As reported by GameSpot, Sony has clarified that Morbius is part of Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel characters, and not the MCU. They have also confirmed that the film is on track to be released on January 28, 2022.

While some may be dismayed at the news, it does not take away from the fact that we will be meeting an official vampire superhero very soon – now, that’s something you can’t boast about very often!
