During Netflix’s Fourth Quarterly 2021 earnings call, when asked about Squid Game, co-CEO Ted Sarandos commented,

Absolutely. The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.

Sarandos added that the show has tremendous growth potential with live experiences, games, and merchandise. This strategy is similar to how Netflix has been extending its other big title, Bridgerton, which was the streamer’s most-viewed series before Squid Game took over.

According to Netflix’s data, Squid Game was streamed 1.65 billion hours worldwide in the first 28 days of its release.

In a confidential data acquired by Bloomberg, it was revealed that the show created almost $900 million in value for Netflix. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before the South Korean thriller drama series, aka Netflix’s golden goose, would be renewed for Season 2.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and star Lee Jung-jae have both expressed their enthusiasm regarding Season 2 ever since the series blew up.

Hwang had previously talked about the series’ alternate ending and how the official ending impacts where the story could go in Season 2.

The series won three Golden Globe Awards and became the first non-English-language series to receive a nomination at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Squid Game Season 1 is currently available to stream on Netflix.
