The Book of Boba Fett Episode 5 Catches up on Mando’s Return

Din Djarin has made his way into The Book of Boba Fett Episode 5, returning just in time for The Mandalorian Season 3.

Boba Fett star Temuera Morrison had previously teased big surprises and cameos , so even though Mando’s appearance was a pleasant surprise, it wasn’t like fans did not see it coming at all.

As is the age-old tradition of having crossover events connecting two ‘spawns’ of the same parent franchise—it only made sense for Din to drop by since Boba was reintroduced in The Mandalorian to set up his own series.

Even though the episode preview teased that an “unexpected ally” would return, fans had pretty much guessed who was coming to help Boba Fett and Fennec Shand.

Return of the Mandalorian gives Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin a dramatic return as he’s back to bounty hunting after reuniting Grogu with Luke Skywalker. While on a job, he uses, or more precisely, struggles to use, the Darksaber and injures himself in the process.

Limping away due to his injury, he makes his way to meet the Armorer and Paz Vizsla. After a heartfelt reunion, there’s a cautionary tale of how the Darksaber, forged a thousand years ago, is much like a curse if its wielder has not earned the blade.

Vizsla is quick to challenge Mando to a duel, betting the Darksaber for the win. Din makes Vizsla surrender, and when asked to renew his vows, he admits that he has taken off his helmet. To which, the Armorer bluntly replies that he’s no longer a Mandalorian.

As Din doesn’t have the Razor Crest anymore, commuting is quite a hassle. Peli Motto is working hard on an old N-1 Naboo starfighter, a perfect fit to replace Razor Crest, as Mando later calls it a “wizard” after flying it for a test run (referencing Anakin’s catchphrase).

Now that the much smaller Naboo N-1 Starfighter, first seen in 1999’s The Phantom Menace, is Mando’s, it’s the perfect ride for when he helps Boba with the Pykes in the series finale and way beyond that into his own journey.

The episode sets things up for The Mandalorian Season 3 as it gives Din a purpose to restore his position, hinting at new adventures on Mandalore and to reunite with Grogu.

With a 52-minute runtime, the episode makes a detour. Fett is absent and Fennec doesn’t even show up till the final moment, so one can almost count it as episode zero of The Mandalorian Season 3.

The Book of Boba Fett is currently streaming on Disney+ with new episodes on Wednesdays.
