Despite She-Hulk arguing with K.E.V.I.N. that her show won’t be a serving dish that reveals yet another new character, movie, or arc, Skaar’s appearance did just that. (Guess the AI has the ultimate authority after all!)
Everything from his origins to why Bruce brought him to Earth remains unexplained. But those familiar with the comics have got one big question: Is the MCU setting up World War Hulk?
While the MCU may create a film or series to explore the World War Hulk arc, it will not follow the comic storyline. This is because the MCU did not adopt the Illuminati’s betrayal of the Hulk, which formed the basis of World War Hulk.
To be honest, there’s no guarantee that World War Hulk will take place. But let’s get acquainted with the original story and what the MCU can do with it.
World War Hulk in the Comics
The way the Illuminati betrays the Hulk in the comics is quite cruel. It starts off by showing how the Hulk has been living a nice, peaceful life in the wilderness without harming anyone.
He is then approached by Nick Fury who requests him to take on a mission to dispose of a rogue personnel on the ISS. He isn’t keen on the mission, but Fury convinces him that he’s the only one who can do it.
After his mission is done, Hulk gets on a ship that is supposed to bring him back home. But the Illuminati (made up of Black Bolt, Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, and Reed Richards) state that they’re exiling him to a lush planet without intelligent life, where he can’t hurt anyone.
Sadly, the craft goes off course and lands up in Sakaar, where Hulk would go on to have Skaar.
World War Hulk is the event where Hulk manages to return back to Earth and vows revenge on the Illuminati. Skaar is not present during the mayhem the Hulk causes on Earth (including destroying New York) but he is a direct consequence of Hulk’s time on Sakaar.
What does the MCU have in mind for Skaar?
The MCU did not adopt the Illuminati storyline. Instead, at the end of Age of Ultron, the Hulk refuses to come back down to Earth after throwing Ultron off his ship. It has then been theorized that the ship accidentally landed on Sakaar, where we see him next in Thor: Ragnarök.
There’s no betrayal at all, and the current Hulk is quite at peace with everything and everyone. So, there’s no way the MCU can whip out a World War Hulk story where he goes on a disastrous rampage.
But there is nothing stopping them from using the title “World War Hulk” to have him on screen with Skaar to depict a different storyline. It’s possible that this film or series could finally explain how Bruce learned about Skaar’s existence, why he brought him to Earth, and even adopt one of Skaar’s own comic storylines.
(Despite K.E.V.I.N. teasing She-Hulk that she won’t be in a movie, it would be unfair to not have her in something titled World War Hulk).
Right now, however, all theories and speculation remain just that. There has been no official announcement made about the same. Marvel did release its Phase 5 schedule at the San Diego Comic-Con ‘22, and there were no Green projects.
As Marvel is clearly building up its Young Avengers team, it is possible that Skaar may have a bigger role to play in that.
