Steven Knight Reveals Peaky Blinders Movie Will Start Filming In 2023

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has revealed some details about the film that will follow the final season, calling it “the end of the road for Peaky Blinders.”

Knight spoke at a BFI London Film Festival panel, revealing that season 6 is in the last stages of its post-production, and talked a bit about the follow-up film as well.

The writer told Variety that a feature film set in Birmingham will go into production in 2023.

And then I am going to write the feature which will be set in and shot in Birmingham. And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for ‘Peaky Blinders’ as we know it.

Knight also added that there could be “shows related” to the same universe but preferred not to use the term spin-offs. Although, the writer won’t necessarily supervise the future shows if they were to happen.

When the Peaky Blinders film was announced earlier this year in January, Knight told Deadline,

Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.

Since its beginning in 2013, Peaky Blinders steadily rose to be one of the best shows in recent times. Set in Birmingham, England, after WWI, the series follows the Shelby family, primarily Thomas ‘Tommy’ Shelby – who evolves from being a gangster leading the Peaky Blinders into an MP.

In the same Deadline interview, it is mentioned that Knight’s initial plan was “to end the series at seven seasons with the start of WWII so that Peaky becomes a story about people between the wars.”

With the series ending after the upcoming Season 6, the film must’ve probably replaced a seventh season, making the movie sort of a farewell for the gangsters with the razor-blade hats that we’ve grown so ‘fookin’ fond of over the years.

The final season will continue where Season 5 left off two years ago and will answer many questions like the identity of the Black Cat and all the main characters’ fate.

Fans of the show were also left wondering how the show-makers will be able to give actress Helen McCrory, who sadly passed away this April, a proper send-off in the series.

(Forever in our hearts, the badass and unapologetic Aunt Polly).

Knight did not mention a tentative release date for the film. However, Peaky Blinders Season 6 is slated for a spring 2022 release, i.e., sometime between March and June.
