Will The Boss Baby: Back In Business Return With Season 5?

After the affairs of The Boss Baby, Ted Templeton got back into the business with the DreamWorks Animation series created for Netflix The Boss Baby: Back in Business. After four seasons spanning from 2017 to 2020, audiences are still waiting for a confirmation – Will there be a Season 5?

As of June 2021, there are no official updates on the possibility of Season 5.

Here are a few reasons why:

1. Promoting Boss Baby 2 is currently on the DreamWorks agenda.

The sequel returns, revealing a new protagonist Tina, who is Tim Templeton’s infant and more importantly, a top-secret agent for BabyCorp. Former Boss Baby Ted, who, by the way is all grown-up now, must help his niece succeed in her mission against their new enemy Dr Erwin Armstrong.

In fact, the focus on more Boss Baby films as opposed to a new season, is also reflected in Alec Baldwin’s response to a Twitter Q&A that confirms a third Boss Baby movie is in the works.

2. Fan critique

The Boss Baby TV series is not without criticism. It is entertaining enough for the younger audience who may not fully understand all its nuances and are simply happy to have the original movie in the accessible form of episodes.

However, a petition asking for its cancellation has listed out many salient points.

Although Back in Business is supposed to carry on after the events of The Boss Baby, it moves with complete disregard of the film, which ended with Boss Baby Ted becoming a normal baby again.

In the show, Ted’s return as Boss Baby is never addressed. Instead of a TV series sequel, it would be more fitting to have it labelled as a spin-off or even an alternative universe series.

Characters like Staci, Jimbo and the Triplets are done dirty as their characters are reduced to an annoying one-dimensional version of their movie selves.

Plus, the tone of political humor can come off as distasteful, be it comments on American liberalism or using North Korea as an unnecessary analogy. While dark humor is always welcomed in animated series, it needs to be well served if one wants to get it right.

3. The Templeton Brother’s Story Arc

With the direction taken in the TV series, the Templeton brothers have gone through their fair share of adventures and trials. Season 4 ends with Boss Baby Ted finally accepting that he must move on (and grow up) by accepting to drink his baby formula. There is a sweet note of Tim Templeton promising to always take care of his baby brother Ted.

With the story arch tied up with a neat bow, it seems unlikely for the show to have a Season 5 in the immediate future.

The possibility of having grown-ups back in BabyCorp does come up in The Boss Baby: Family Business, wherein the de-aging formula turns adult Ted back into a baby, only for 48 hours.

The new sequel also opens up the chance for a new Boss Baby protagonist other than Ted, with his baby niece Tina taking the reins. If Boss Baby 2 does well, perhaps Tina might get a show of her own too?

For now, If you’d like to see the Boss Baby back in action, we’d recommend saving the date for The Boss Baby: Family Business in July 2.
