It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia S16 Features a Bizarre 90s Snack: TMNT Pies

If you are a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you might have watched the season 16 premiere and wondered what Charlie was eating.

He called them TMNT Pies, and they looked like green goo-filled pastries. Are they a joke? A hallucination? A secret ninja weapon?

No, they are real! TMNT Pies were a real product inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the 90s.

Here is the story behind Charlie’s bizarre snack and how it connects to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 is here, and it’s as funny as ever. The first episode of the new season tackles the hot topic of inflation, with the gang trying to make a profit from the soaring prices.

While the others have their own plans to exploit the economy, Charlie has a different idea: TMNT Pies. What are these weird green pastries, and why does Charlie love them so much?

TMNT pies were a snack cake made by Hostess in 1991 to promote the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Like other Hostess treats, they had a green crust and a vanilla filling.

However, they didn’t last long, and Hostess stopped making them later that year. TMNT Pies have been gone for decades until Charlie brought them back in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16.

Most people may have forgotten the Pies, but not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, who still love them as a quirky merch.

Charlie knows this and thinks he can kill it by selling the old pies. He uses all of the gang’s money to buy up all the TMNT Pies he can find, hoping to create a demand for them.

However, his plan backfires, as no one wants to eat expired pies except for Frank Reynolds, who buys them all from Charlie.

The entire fiasco is odd, but it actually adds to Charlie’s comedy. The episode shows Charlie as the only one who gets the inflation crisis and explains it clearly, but then he goes and buys TMNT Pies as an investment.

This contrast between Charlie’s smarts and silliness is what makes him so funny, and the season 16 opener nails it.

Charlie’s love for TMNT Pies shows how he never grew up. He is not just obsessed with his weird childhood favorites; he also uses them in his crazy plans today.

TMNT Pies are a rare and obscure item to revive, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 uses them perfectly and nails it.
