Heels Finale Brings Out Duffy Wrestling League’s Biggest Problem

The Duffy Wrestling League may have ended on a high, crowning Crystal as the champion, but it was only a timely save. Heels’ finale highlighted that if the Spade brothers do not learn to control their emotions, the DWL may once again fall into jeopardy.

I liken wrestling leagues to any other stage production — you need to be a team, you need to let your ego go, and you need to be honest.

The DWL may have a legacy in Georgia, but it is failing to live up to its hype, what with Jack’s manipulative strategies and Ace’s childishness. We see this right in Episode 1 itself, where Jack tricks Ace in their very first match on screen.

While initially, Jack’s sabotage comes across as him ensuring his brother doesn’t get signed on by big leagues, in the finale, Jack confesses that he was watching over his brother who is not known to make the best decisions or react mindfully. He was afraid of Ace crashing and burning in a big league.

But noble intentions don’t forgive his methods used.

Ace, on the other hand, does prove his brother right by time and again letting his emotions get the better of him. It almost proved fatal when he injures Bobby Pin in the ring over his love-life jealousy issues outside the ring.

Then even when the two finally get on the same side to help the DWL shine out in the Georgia State Fair, their respective confessions about their misdeeds cause everything to go sideways.

Once again, someone else has to step in to save the day — this time Crystal, who intervenes between the two brothers fighting for real in the ring, instead of play-acting.

Crystal

Seeing Crystal in the ring reminds the brothers that they’re at the Georgia State Fair, where their performance can make or break the Duffy Wrestling League. They step back, allowing Crystal to win it all and making it a very satisfying ending.

This unbrotherly dynamic is the running ribbon throughout the series, and I will admit that it is emotionally compelling to explore their relationship, especially what beliefs drive them.

It does not take away that this rocky back and forth could lead to DWL’s downfall.

The DWL has been saved this time. But if the show gets renewed for Season 2, I’m not sure the league can move forward if the Spade brothers do not resolve their issues.
