So far, the movie is in its early stages and is expected to start filming in January 2022 in Spain. The film will be co-written by Ritcher, Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies and executively produced by STXfilms.

The movie revolves around Gyllenhaal’s Sergeant John Kinley who is on his last tour in Afghanistan, surveying the region with his local interpreter Ahmed. After suddenly being ambushed by their adversaries, Kinley and Ahmed find that they’re the only surviving members of the team.

The perils are far from over, and Ahmed takes all kinds of risks to get an injured Kinley back to safe shores.

However, back on American soil, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given the safety of passage to the USA as they were promised. Committed to right a wrong, Kinley travels back to Afghanistan in order to retrieve Ahmed and his family before it’s too late.

As of now, other than Gyllenhaal’s confirmation, no other cast has been added to the list. It is left to see who will play Ahmed and if any other notable characters will be freshly added to the plot.

Ritchie explained that he was inspired to write the story after conversations with soldiers and their interpreters who form a special relationship while putting everything on the line.

Ritchie has previously worked on Sherlock Holmes, the live-action Alladin, and the upcoming 2021 Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.

Gyllenhaal has dabbled quite a bit in the war-action genre: Jarhead, Brothers, Combat Control, and others. Right now, the Oscar nominee actor is quite in demand for these heavy roles, his latest being The Guilty.

The two will make a formidable duo. I look forward to The Interpreter!
