James Gunn Hints That His DCU Plans are Largely Story-Driven

James Gunn has finally opened up about his plans to reform the DC Universe. He recently dropped a major hint about his plans on social media.

James Gunn and Peter Safran recently took over as co-CEOs of the DC Universe. The newly appointed CEOs revealed that they intend on reforming and reframing the shared universe and have been putting together an elaborate 10-year plan to move forward with their ideas.

While Gunn and Safran are in the early stages of implementing the elaborate plan, various rumors have been making rounds regarding their intentions and the franchise’s future. Gunn recently took to social media to reply to such rumors and shared as much as he could at this stage.

Gunn tweeted that some of the rumors doing the rounds are true, some are partly true, some are downright false, and others are yet to be discussed. The writer-director did not elaborate further on this, as they’re at an early stage of decision-making.

In his thread, Gunn admits that he cannot promise that he will be able to make everyone happy moving forward. However, the CEO assures that the future of the franchise will be designed keeping in mind the ‘story’ and our beloved DC characters.

From his comments, we can draw an interesting inference. Gunn mentions a single, specific “story” in his tweet, as opposed to various plotlines. Gunn’s DCU will most likely focus on a singular, central plot even before individual characters.

James Gunn’s version of the DCU is clearly driven by passion and love. The writer-director seems to be determined to make the franchise reach its full potential. Considering his potential as a writer and director, he makes it easy to have faith in his ‘story’.

However, Gunn’s emphasis on a specific story could mean that some characters will be written off from the universe as they do not fit into the current narrative. While this might seem counterintuitive at first, it will help to focus more on what is being done rather than what isn’t. Gunn and Safran’s labor of love definitely deserves a fair chance from DC fans.

Going by Gunn’s tweets, the future DC movies will most likely be much more clear in terms of their narrative. Gunn also mentioned that his plan incorporates television, films and even animated content.

Gunn’s ideas look promising on paper and if they’re implemented well, the DCU could easily compete with the MCU once again. Marvel Studios has always been known for its long-term planning, though they’re a tad bit more flexible than we give them credit for.

Interestingly, Joe Russo, the director of Avengers: Endgame, recently hinted that the MCU’s masterplan is nothing more than a myth. Since the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige is strictly a producer, and not a writer, he cannot be trusted to think as creatively as James Gunn would, being a writer-director himself.

James Gunn’s DCU has the potential to be much more concise and story-driven than the MCU. It can also avoid the huge plot holes that we see so frequently in the MCU. Gunn most likely has a basic structure in mind already and is trying to put various pieces together to form a comprehensive plan.

This task will test not only Gunn and Safran’s managerial qualities, but also Gunn’s ability as a writer. However, DC Studios should also remain flexible and adaptive, in case certain aspects of the original plan do not work out. But we hope it does and we see a completely new, better version of the DCU.
