New Co-CEOs Are Working on an Updated 10-Year Plan for the DCU

James Gunn, the new co-CEO of DC Studios, confirms that they’re working to come up with a new, comprehensive 10-year plan mapping the future of the DC Universe.

The journey of the DC Cinematic Universe began with the 2013 film, Man of Steel. It was designed specifically to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back then, the DCU was referred to as the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). 2013’s Man of Steel was followed by the much-criticized Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.

The DCEU has had a difficult journey so far, characterized by changing faces, behind-the-scenes controversies and immense criticism. Warner Bros. Discovery has recently decided to give the franchise another chance, by appointing James Gunn and producer Peter Safran as co-CEOs in DC Studios.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn has recently elaborated on the co-CEOs’ plans moving forward with the DCU. Gunn said that his plans aim “to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be”. Read his entire statement below –

“The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be — that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that. We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight to ten year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.”

Gunn and Safran taking over came as a ray of hope for DC fans who have been waiting to see the franchise overcome its difficulties. Though some of its big-screen projects, such as Aquaman and Wonder Woman managed to win hearts earlier, DC has often failed to achieve the success of their arch-rivals, the MCU.

As of now, fans are looking forward to seeing what the new CEOs have in mind for the DCU’s future. However, we’re not sure when Gunn and Safran will make their big plans for the franchise public. If they take the route of the MCU, we can expect their plans to be revealed in a big event, such as the San Diego Comic-Con.

The co-CEOs can also consider reviving the DC Fandome event, which was discontinued previously. In this case, they can reveal their plans much before the SDCC, which generally takes place in July.

At this point, the DCU has a number of upcoming releases lined up, including Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. These projects are already in various stages of production, so it is likely that Gunn and Safran’s plans won’t begin taking shape anytime soon.

Moreover, the duo is surely not planning to reform the entire franchise. Their plans will work to move forward with the already established storylines and plot points. Either way, we hope the duo reveals their new plan soon and it works out fine for the DCU.
