James Gunn Reveals a 2022 Release for the ‘Peacemaker’ Series

Filmmaker James Gunn gave an early 2022 release date for Peacemaker, the upcoming Suicide Squad spinoff series.

In his recent Instagram story, Gunn disclosed that Peacemaker is scheduled to release in January 2022. During a fan Q&A on his Instagram story on his way to a night shoot for Peacemaker, Gunn was asked when fans can expect the show to release, to which he replied, “January 2022.”

The forthcoming HBO Max series features John Cena as the ruthless killer, Peacemaker, one of the current additions to the DCEU. Illustrated as a “douchey Captain America” who will do anything to achieve peace (including kill). Cena’s Peacemaker will be a new member of Task Force X in Gunn’s sequel-reboot of 2016’s Suicide Squad.

A spinoff show was first confirmed in September 2020, with Gunn producing, writing every episode, and directing several.

Though Warner Bros. has kept much of the show’s story under wraps, Gunn revealed that Peacemaker‘s timeline would not be made clear until after The Suicide Squad, which is currently set for release in both theaters and HBO Max on August 6.

Further adding to the show’s hype, Gunn also confirmed that various Suicide Squad characters would appear in the spinoff series, including Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee’s John Economos.

The show is already in production in Toronto and Vancouver. It is planned to wrap up by June 9, and now Gunn has just revealed the show’s release date.

Gunn appears to have a lot of creative freedom with the series. The filmmaker even joked that the show would only be 40 seconds long if edited for television.

Now that the series has a release date, fans can look forward to getting to know the anti-hero better after meeting him for the first time in The Suicide Squad.

Peacemaker is a DC Extended Universe series that will delve into the past of the titular character, who’ll make his cinematic debut in James Gunn’s DCEU film, The Suicide Squad (2021). The character will be portrayed by John Cena, who will reprise his role in the HBO Max series.

Other cast members include Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Chris Conrad, and Chukwudi Iwuji among many others.
