DC’s Peacemaker is fun to watch. And James Gunn and Co. have had just as much fun, if not more, while making the series.
The show is off its hinges in the best possible way, so it doesn’t come off as a surprise that some improvisations made the final cut.
John Cena has previously talked about improvs in an interview with Nerdist and mentioned how Gunn preparing the script in advance helped the actors play around with the dialogues/lines.
And now Gunn has revealed that he kept more improvised lines from Cena for the series than he ever did on his previous projects (and no, not even Guardian’s Chris Pratt comes close).
When Twitter user @Tru_Alpha asked which of the actor’s lines were improvs, Gunn mentioned that it was hardly about 2% but added that it was still a lot more than any other actor has had on the director’s other works.
While talking to The Wrap, Jennifer Holland, who plays Emilia Harcourt, talked about all the ridiculous things that Peacemaker says all the time,
To some degree the scripted stuff is easy because you’re prepared for that… But then a lot of it doesn’t make it into the show, some of it does, but there’s a lot of times that John will improv or close out the scene with a bit of improv or something like that, and sometimes, something will just take you by surprise.
Fresh off after lying in the hospital for about five months after the events of The Suicide Squad (2021), Peacemaker has a new team and old traumas to work with. Instead of a giant starfish, it’s Project Butterfly the antihero has to deal with.
With a band of misfits on a black ops mission, a pet eagle, unresolved daddy issues, and a psychopath for a best friend, Peacemaker has everything you’ve ever wanted out of a comic book adaptation of a crazy “superhero.”
All four episodes of Peacemaker are now available on HBO Max, with new episodes out weekly.
Peacemaker is an upcoming DC Extended Universe series which will delve into the past of the titular character, who’ll make his cinematic debut in James Gunn’s DCEU film, The Suicide Squad (2021). The character will be portrayed by John Cena, who will reprise his role in the HBO Max series.
Other cast members include Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Chris Conrad, and Chukwudi Iwuji among many others.
James Gunn will also helm the HBO Max series and has announced a tentative release date for Peacemaker to be in January 2022.
