James Gunn Shares Kingdom Come Art, Hinting at DCU’s Future

Newly appointed co-CEOs of DC Film Studios, Peter Safran and James Gunn, are currently brainstorming a game plan for the media franchise, spanning several years. James Gunn has frequently taken to social media after his appointment at DC to drop hints on what the fandom can expect in the coming years.

This week, the director took to Twitter to share an image with the caption “making plans,” suggesting a new course for the DCU. The image in question is from Kingdom come event back in 1996, featuring the return of DC’s classic heroes to fight the more corrupt modern supers.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the co-CEO has used this particular comic to elicit theories from fans about the DCU’s future. But the continued use of the comic event suggests that the two CEOs are deliberating upon its role in earnest.

James Gunn has even teased other unused heroes and issues of DC Comics, hinting at their possible debut in the new and improved DCU.

Henry Cavill’s Superman will surely return to the DCU after his hiatus from the franchise since Justice League. But if Gunn’s posts are to be taken seriously, we might see newer heroes like Mister terrific and Lobo soon.

Kingdom Come remains one of DC Comics’ most iconic issues, and its introduction in the DCU could just be the saving grace it needs. But given WBD’s stance on the connected franchise, Kingdom Come might act as a standalone movie set in a timeline apart from the DCU, like What If is for the MCU.

Whether this is truly a blueprint of what the duo plans for the DCU in the future or just one of Gunn’s tactics to distract fans from the actual projects, we can’t be sure.

We’ve already got Black Adam officially on the DCU roster, so we are excited to see Safran and Gunn’s big plans unfold.
