James Gunn Reveals ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Will Be His Last

On May 3, Marvel released a teaser titled Marvel Studios Celebrates The Movies’, which included the release dates of all of the anticipated movies of Phase 4. Director James Gunn took to Twitter to share a screengrab of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’s release date, captioning it, “See you all in theaters two years from Wednesday. 5.5.23 🚀🚀🚀”

Under this tweet, a fan asked whether he’d be returning for Vol. 4. To this, James replied, “I’m planning on it being my last.

Gunn was fired as the director of the third film in 2018 after a bunch of old offensive tweets, making light of grave topics like rape and pedophilia, resurfaced. Gunn released a statement addressing the issue and apologized for his mistakes.

Shortly after, fans circulated a petition urging Disney to reconsider and a fan-crowdfunded billboard went up in Anaheim, CA to rehire Gunn, which led to Disney eventually rehiring him.

Back in 2020, while doing a Q&A on his Instagram story, James had talked about not returning for Vol. 4 of the franchise and had also commented that it “likely won’t feature the current team either.” But he had added that “you never know,” leaving room for some possibility of him returning. The recent tweet, however, seems to confirm that he has no plans of returning. He also confirmed that there will be a death in the upcoming third installment.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 will include the whole team of Guardians. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will probably return as well. However, this would be the Gamora from the past we were introduced to during Avengers: Endgame, and has no history with the Guardians.

Guardians 3 will hit the theaters on May 5, 2023. But fans won’t have to wait for long because Thor: Love and Thunder will also feature some of them, as at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor decides to join the Guardians on their ship.
