On February 19, James Gunn answered a fan question about a live-action Rick and Morty, saying that he “would never touch” the animated series.
One of today’s most prominent directors, Gunn is fans’ preferred director to helm their favorite series, for they know he wouldn’t disappoint the fans. Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and 3 were enough proof of his brilliance in handling fan-favorite characters.
A fan quote-retweeted Gunn’s post on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 set with his production cart filled with Rick & Morty figurines. Knowing how big a fan he is, the fan said that he hopes the director helms the live-action series, if it ever is made.
Replying to the fan, Gunn shared his thoughts on the show and said that the show is so “perfect” that he could never consider a live-action.
The adult sci-fi show Rick and Morty has solidified its position as a classic in animated series. As per Gunn, it is also “one of the greatest TV shows ever”—another reason why he wouldn’t consider making an adaptation.
Fans’ expectations for a live-action might be fueled by watching Christopher Lloyd and Jaeden Martell pull off the characters flawlessly during the end of Season 5. Their appearance made possible (at least in imagination) human faces to the nihilistic mad scientist grandfather Rick and his grandson Morty.
In August last year, series writer Cody Ziglar shared that the team was done scripting for the seventh season. The Adult Swim Festival 2021 also announced that Season 6 would arrive in 2022.
Rick and Morty have a long way to go—with reports that the show could go up to 10 seasons as Adult Swim had renewed the series for 70 episodes in 2018.
Meanwhile, Gunn’s Peacemaker series is already creating buzz among fans and is well on its way to being a hit.
