Actor Jason Sudeikis has revealed why his titular character on the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso wears those orange-tinted sunglasses. The first season of the show premiered in August 2020, became an instant hit among audiences, and was renewed for a second and third season, as well.
Now ahead of Season 2’s release on July 23, Sudeikis is in full swing of promoting the upcoming installment. Joining WandaVision’s Kathryn Hahn in an edition of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, both stars discussed their respective roles.
This allowed Sudeikis to talk about how the show expressed his character’s positive outlook on life, even down to his colored aviators. Apparently, the actor chose them himself and, according to him, makes the “greens greener and blues bluer.” Sudeikis also spoke about how magic mushrooms played a major role in the impetus of Lasso and the show overall.
Even down to the glasses that I picked as the character. They make greens greener and blues bluer… I haven’t done them in years, but a big impetus for the character and for the point of view of the show is magic mushrooms. Because both Brendan and Joe and I all lived in Amsterdam for various points of our life doing Boom Chicago, which was started by three Northwestern alums. And they were legal at that point.

Thus, Lasso wears the sunglasses both literally and figuratively, with Sudeikis stating that he chose to sport them intentionally. He has previously likened his experience of playing Ted Lasso to wearing the 1980s BluBlockers, which were an infomercial phenomenon.
Similarly, the glasses help brighten Ted’s point of view and make him see the world in a positive light. That very same optimism is bound to be tested in the upcoming season as marketing material suggests that his club will be downgraded to a lower league while they endure a season of losing streaks.
But hopefully, Lasso’s lucky orange-tinted sunglasses will be around to save the day and help him tackle this setback with all the positivi-tea needed.
