Jon Bernthal on The Punisher and Possible Return to the MCU

To fans who cannot wait to see The Punisher in the MCU, Jon Bernthal responds, “Frank Castle is in my bones.” But as of yet, he is unaware of any plans involving his character’s return.

Daredevil, arguably, had one of Marvel’s best storylines and performances. So, it is sad that its denouement meant saying goodbye to iconic characters such as Charlie Cox’s horned vigilante and Bernthal’s Punisher.

Now that Marvel has exclusive rights over the characters, fans are hoping the two will make a comeback on the silver screens.

Already, optimistic theories are floating around Cox’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home (which he denied), and now, fans are rallying for Bernthal to be back in the MCU as well… even if it isn’t as The Punisher.

The role in question is that of Wolverine, which is up for grabs after Hugh Jackson’s departure and may see a reboot given Marvel’s recent acquisition.

Will Bernthal be up for playing Wolverine? Here’s what he has to say:

Look, the criteria in which I sort of decide what I’m doing next is: Does the script move me? Who am I working with? Who is the filmmaker and is that somebody I’m dying to work with? I’m going to hold onto that moving forward no matter what that is.

While the actor points out that his answer will depend on the project itself, I find it unlikely that Marvel will recast Bernthal as Wolverine when they have him as the perfect Punisher.

Bernthal acknowledges that the character has a deep connection not just with the TV show fans but with the comic community, law enforcement, and the military as well.

And as such, he would always be happy to reprise the role if the new chapter (be it an MCU movie or TV show) does the fans justice.

I like the Bernthal says it’s not important to weigh down on whether or not they (Marvel) will get The Punisher back, but rather “how” they do it.

The how is indeed yet to be seen. But it is hard to believe that Marvel won’t bank on fan-favorite characters whose time on Netflix may have ended.

In fact, the rumor mill has already spewed up news of a “reboot” of all of Marvel’s Netflix shows, including Daredevil, into one big series. Only time will tell if this is actually true or wishful thinking.

Charlie Cox recently affirmed that he did not believe anyone could do The Punisher better than Jon Bernthal. I hope the folks at Marvel HQ agree!
