Riverdale Creator Teases Bughead and Where S5 Storyline Could Lead Them

Riverdale Season 5 has returned with its eleventh episode this week with an episode that had a lot of twists and turns that I don’t think I can keep track of for much longer.

Speaking of twists and turns, the Bughead ship is sailing on such high tides that it’s doubtful how much longer they can keep it in working conditions. If you fear a downward fate, then don’t fret because series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is here to explain it all.

In an interview with ET, Aguirre-Sacasa broke down Betty’s voicemail from Jughead and hinted at what’s coming next for Bughead, the rest of the characters in season 5. When asked about the voicemail, he answered,

Cole did kill it on that voicemail, and I will say he first recorded it when we shot that episode. But in an upcoming episode, we follow Jughead and everything that has happened in those seven years. We see how Betty and Jughead’s relationship evolved over those seven years, and we see the events that lead to that tragic night when he left that message — and Cole’s performance in that episode is so good.

Aguirre-Sacasa added that it was Cole Sprouse who reached out to him and expressed his desire to re-record the voicemail,

And these poor actors, you know they sometimes have no idea why they’re doing things, but then they find out three episodes later. So with Cole, we initially talked a little bit about the voicemail, and he totally dove in and went for it — but then once he had more context, he went back and re-recorded it, and it’s a beautiful performance that Cole gives in that episode.

By the looks of it, the re-recording worked in the show’s favor as fans were surprised by the voicemail but had also seen it coming. Most of them had positive things to say about it:

The creator had all praises for Bughead as he mentions he was ‘rooting for’ the pair and that the ‘voicemail reflects a moment in time.’ When asked to further elaborate on their relationship, he added,

What’s funny is that Betty and Jughead haven’t really been in a storyline together [this season], and when we did the time jump, we really wanted to make sure that when we returned to it, [Riverdale] didn’t immediately fall into the same show.

But I will say we love that Betty is worried about Jughead, we love that she’s teaming up with Tabitha to try and find him. And there’s one scene, I think it’s maybe episode 516, that is almost like a standalone mini-opera. It’s just Betty and Jughead alone, and it’s so good to see Lili and Cole in scenes together, and their chemistry is sort of undeniable.

So we are going to see more of Betty and Jughead, and even if it doesn’t mean that they are immediately getting back together, they were an important part of each other’s life, and it’s good that we’re getting back to that.

This might be comforting for fans who think of Betty and Jughead as endgame, and hopefully, Riverdale writers can untangle the mess and mystery before diving into Bughead’s relationship again. If one were to take Aguirre-Sacasa’s word for it, Bughead might just have a chance to build broken bridges.

About Riverdale

Based on a story from the popular Archies Comics, the 2017 Netflix drama Riverdale is centered on an innocent, small town of the same name.

It follows a group of high school students who are shocked by the death of a classmate, Jason Blossom. Together they unravel the secrets of Riverdale and who killed Jason.

Cole Sprouse’s grungy Jughead is the show’s narrator and school reporter who almost acts like its ‘Gossip Girl’ — documenting the characters’ lives and filling in the blanks for us.
