‘Jurassic World 3’ Director on Why Prologue Goes Back to Cretaceous Era

Director of Jurassic World: Dominion Colin Trevorrow has revealed why the upcoming film goes back to the Cretaceous period. The Jurassic World movies owe most of their success to the original 1993 series directed by Steven Spielberg. Now with the third film in the renewed trilogy set to see the light of day in June 2022, there’s a lot more to expect.

While the release is still almost a year away, it was recently announced that an extended preview of the prologue sequence set in the Cretaceous period would be shown before the IMAX screenings of Fast & Furious 9. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, director Trevorrow revealed the reason behind the prologue, visiting an era the series never has before.

“Maybe because we hadn’t done it! That’s the kind of answer, right? It felt to me that if you’re someone who enjoys our films and you love dinosaurs enough, I can’t imagine that seeing the Cretaceous era wouldn’t interest you. And it was something I wanted in the end; I think there’s a self-indulgence in it. When I was a kid, I was a dinosaur nerd who wanted to see that world, and now I’m lucky enough to be able to realize it. I went out and just grabbed the opportunity.”

The first installment in the Jurassic World reboot trilogy came out in 2015 and was a box office hit amassing $1.67 billion. Directed by Trevorrow and starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in leading roles, it brought back the franchise to its former glory.

Universal promptly ordered a sequel, 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which also saw the return of Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm in a cameo appearance and grossed $1.31 billion worldwide.

According to people who’ve already watched the preview for Dominion, it is set during the Cretaceous period that was 65 million years ago. Featuring a score by Michael Giacchino, the prologue plays out like a soothing nature film ensuring that viewers experience the perfect tranquility of the Earth before the birth of humanity.

The scene will also include seven new species of dinosaurs never seen before in the previous movies. It will also feature a scene of a mosquito sucking on the blood of a dinosaur, calling back to the first Jurassic Park movie, which established that the franchise’s dinosaur origins came from their DNA being extracted from mosquitoes preserved in amber.

It’s going to be exciting to see Jurassic World: Dominion go back to the Cretaceous era to explore the real origins of these beings we have come to be so familiar and fascinated with throughout the films. Here’s hoping it lives up to it!
