Just In: Fast and Furious 9 Delayed Yet Again!

The latest installment of Universal Studios’ biggest grossing film franchise, Fast and Furious, is likely to be delayed by another month. The ninth main film is – I mean, was – expected to release on May 28, 2021.

But it looks like the film might get delayed yet again. With an eye on a full theatrical release, Universal wants to wait out the coronavirus pandemic before releasing Fast and Furious 9. So the studio might go for a late summer date instead of an early one, thus leaving a gaping hole for blockbusters in summer.

Fans are definitely disappointed after such a long wait. The most “have-to-know” part of Fast 9 might be knowing more about John Cena’s role as Jakob and Sung Kang’s come back as Han, who was known to be killed off in Fast and Furious 6. Fans were quite surprised to see him alive and are burning for answers.

But the coronavirus pandemic has led to delay in several film projects, and many studios have sustained losses from the promotional events. And undoubtedly, delaying the ninth Fast and Furious film must have caused a colossal loss to Universal studios.

Fast9 will join a slew of major films with a delayed theatre release. The latest James Bond film No Time To Die has been delayed multiple times and for similar reasons. The competitors MGM and University have been trying to avoid releasing their respective blockbusters in the same season, thus delaying their films periodically since April 2020.

These delays are proving fatal for the theatre industry meanwhile. Not very long ago, the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) had to make a desperate appeal to the government to help them. While most of them were bailed out by the government, several small and midsize theatres remain on the verge of shutting down.

Meanwhile, the Fast9 star cast has been quite determined to bring the film to the big screen. Actor and producer, Vin Diesel is determined to get Fast and Furious 9 a full-blown theatrical release. As is John Cena, the wrestler-turned-actor, who plays Dom’s estranged brother Jakob. Cena had previously mentioned in an interview with a magazine that “Fast 9 is definitely a reason to go to the cinema.”

Fans will have to wait for a little longer to quench their thirst for the answers. But the upside is that Fast 9 might become an even bigger blockbuster than their previous films, considering how long it has been since the world has had a movie released in the cinema theatres.

But if by some miracle, the pandemic recedes in the next two months (Amen to that), the film might actually see the light of the day as scheduled on May 28, 2021. Whatever it may be, we will keep you updated. Stay tuned.

About Fast and Furious 9

Fast and Furious 9 (or F9) is an American action film directed by Justin Lin. The film is a sequel to 2017’s The Fast and Furious and the ninth instalment in the Fast and Furious franchise.

Dominic Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian. But they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver ever seen: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob.
