Black Slavery Drama ‘Alice’ Gets Powerful Trailer At Sundance

“I am freedom,” declares Alice, played by Keke Palmer, as she takes revenge on her owner in the movie, Alice.

A directorial debut of Krystin Ver Linden, who also wrote the film, the trailer of Alice was released by Vertical Entertainment, with its theatrical release date – March 18.

The movie shines an empowering light on Alice, one of the many Black people enslaved by Paul (Johnny Lee Miller) in rural Georgia. Paul has built his world where he calls Black people “livestock” and is extremely violent and brutal to them.

The trailer shows Alice’s journey of the inhuman experience under Paul, discovering its 1973 – one of the most important Black movement times in the US – finding freedom and eventually taking revenge.

In the video, Alice stumbles upon Frank, a political activist played by Common. He shows Alice the world she had been kept hidden from – a world which was swung in motion to end discrimination, a world with no master or slave.

As Alice transforms and explores the liberated world, she can’t get out of the memories of being wronged her entire life.

Then she starts her revenge journey as she goes back, burns forests, uses the same inhumane tools on Paul – showing everyone her power.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Palmer expressed what made her eyes twinkle in the script and take it up.

“It was just very informative, exciting, engaging. I felt, ‘This is fresh.’ I felt empowered. This is the big thing for me. When we go back in time to our stuff, it’s like, ‘Here we go. Time to get sad. Time to get victimized.’ That’s not what happened here. That’s what I loved about it.”
