DreamWorks Animation has officially confirmed that Kung Fu Panda 4 is in development and will release in theaters on March 8, 2024.
Kung Fu Panda is one of the most popular franchises produced by DreamWorks Animation and one of the world’s most loved and successful animated feature-film series. The franchise has grossed $1.8 billion at the box office worldwide.
The franchise follows Po (Jack Black), an ordinary panda whose life changes when he becomes the fabled Dragon Warrior and a master at kung-fu with the help of his master Shifu and other kung-fu masters, The Furious Five.
Apart from the three films in the feature-film franchise, the makers have expanded the franchise on the small screen and digital platforms. It includes a holiday special, along with three television series.
The first series, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, was telecasted on Nickelodeon and later moved on to Nicktoons. The other two series, Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny and, most recently, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight released on Amazon Prime and Netflix, respectively. However, there were no updates on the status of Kung Fu Panda 4 for a long time.
Now, according to Deadline reports, Kung Fu Panda 4 is in development and is all set to return to theaters after an 8-year-long hiatus. The film is slated for release on March 8, 2024, as officially confirmed by DreamWorks Animation.
Kung Fu Panda 4 will mark the first time Universal Pictures is distributing a film from the franchise after they acquired DreamWorks in 2016. No plot details for the upcoming fourth installment of the series have been revealed, and no director has come on board yet.
If the makers stick to the March 2024 release date, it will have been 16 years since the first Kung Fu Panda film and 8 years since the release of the last one. DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures probably have high hopes for the film, banking on generational nostalgia to do wonders at the box office.
Kung Fu Panda might face considerable competition from Spider-Man: Beyond the SpiderVerse, slated to release on March 29, 2024, three weeks after Kung Fu Panda 4. However, good word of mouth, generational nostalgia, and a three-week head start at the box office should help the franchise make a profit. We saw the same with the impressive performance of Minions: The Rise of Gru at the box office this summer.
You can watch the Kung Fu Panda series on Netflix.
