How ‘F9’ Is Setting up ‘Tokyo Drift 2’

Fast and Furious 9 is setting up a possible Tokyo Drift 2, by bringing back Han, Sean, Twinkie, and Earl.

After Han died in the first film, a Tokyo Drift 2 always seemed impossible, but it seems like Fast and Furious 9 could finally be setting it up. As revealed in the first F9 trailer, which seemed to have come out a lifetime ago in January 2020, the upcoming film is reviving Han, played by Sung Kang. Han was believed dead for the past two movies.

With Han back in action in F9, and the trailers suggesting he’s been hiding out in Tokyo since his supposed death, fans are eagerly awaiting the release. F9 will also see Sean Boswell (Lucas Black), Earl Hu (Jason Tobin), and Twinkie (Bow Wow) reprising their roles. The drift squad could finally be getting a sequel, one that bridges the gap between what happened in Tokyo Drift and F9.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is the only core film not to feature Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) or Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), although the former did cameo at the very end of the movie. It’s also the only movie in the series to take place out of release order since it’s the third film made, but the sixth film in the timeline. Tokyo Drift also focused on a very unique corner of car culture in the Japanese drift scene. Nevertheless, the primary reason behind the movie’s popularity is that it introduced both Han and director Justin Lin to the series.

Moreover, there’s a lot to explore regarding whether Sean is still the Drift King. What happened to the other Tokyo Drift characters and their relationship with the Yakuza? Where has Han been all this time? Tokyo Drift 2 can dive into all that and be both a prequel and a sequel to F9.

The trailer for F9: The Fast Saga came out back in January 2020, prior to the pandemic.

Besides a Tokyo Drift sequel, two more core entries in the Fast franchise, after F9: The Fast Saga and a potential spinoff film in the vein of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, have already been confirmed.

About Fast and Furious 9

Fast and Furious 9 (or F9) is an American action film directed by Justin Lin. The film is a sequel to 2017’s The Fast and Furious and the ninth instalment in the Fast and Furious franchise.

The film will star Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Helen Mirren and John Cena, among others. The film was delayed for over a year due to the pandemic in March 2020. It is scheduled to release in the United States on June 25, 2021.

Dominic Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian. But they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, the threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver ever seen: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob.
