Prime Original Musical ‘Annette’ Gets a Release Date in New Trailer

A brand new trailer of Leos Carax’s Annette dropped today and has revealed a commercial release date of August 2021. It was also revealed that the Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, starrer will be available on Amazon Prime just a couple of weeks after its theatrical release.

Known for his eccentric 2012 fantasy film Holy Motors, Leos Carax will be directing the movie. It will be his first feature film in over a decade. It is also his first ever full-on English language project, usually he makes film in French and Mandarin.

Annette will have its world premiere on July 6 at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival and the movie hits theaters in the U.S. on August 6.

It will be available to stream on Amazon Prime after August 20, after 2 weeks of its theatrical release.

The trailer boasts loads of luxurious mood lighting, inexplicable cutaway shots of howling wolves, Henry cradling his newborn child in one hand while doing yoga and a burning cigarette in the other, and songwriter Russell Mael leading a jam session.

The new trailer reuses most of the already revealed footage, a clear indication Annette wants to keep its secrets until the last minute possible.

Annette is the sixth feature of Carax’s career and his first work in English. Ron and Russell Mael of the band Sparks, who also sign the script, developed the original story.

Here’s Annette’s official synopsis:

Los Angeles, today. Henry (Driver) is a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor who falls in love with Ann (Cotillard), a world-renowned opera singer. Under the spotlight, they form a passionate and glamorous couple. However, the birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, will turn their lives upside down.

The story and music come courtesy of Ron and Russell Mael, the American pop-rock duo known as The Sparks.

If the festival’s reception to Carax’s last feature is any indication, we’re probably in for one of the year’s most adventurous cinematic oddities.

Annette is scheduled to be released in France on July 6, 2021 by UGC Distribution and on Amazon Prime on July 20, 2021. It will also be the opening film at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival on the same day.
