‘Batgirl’ Leslie Grace Teases Barbara Gordon’s Self-Worth Journey

News of Leslie Grace gracing the DCEU as Barbara Gordon, our very own Batgirl, excited many. And it should, as Batgirl is the second movie in the DCEU to get a stand-alone film for a female superhero as the lead!

Expectedly, fans’ excitement and even Grace’s, is through the roof. This isn’t surprising because Batgirl is only the second acting role of the three Latin Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter.

In an interview with ET Online, the actress opened up about what makes her similar to Batgirl, Barbara Gordon. Barbara is the daughter of Jim Gordon, Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, and has featured in previous classic DC movies and shows.

While in conversation, Grace teased the storyline of the upcoming movie. She talked about the self-worth journey that Barbara desires to take to prove her worth in detail.

She shared that it majorly stems from Barbara being the youngest kid and hence, being inexperienced in facing the “tough stuff of life.” But the urge to prove that she can handle some things on her own is what makes her “purpose-driven”.

Grace further opened up, sharing that she’s “on an endless journey” of knowing how far she can go, what limits she is capable of breaking, and more. As it’s similar to Barbara’s desperate desire to prove herself to the world, Grace is all ready to put her enthusiasm into essaying the role.

Here’s the complete statement of Grace talking about Barbara Gordon:

She’s someone who’s been underestimated by even her own dad and being the youngest kid, sometimes you’re insulated from all of the tough stuff of life and she’s so eager to prove to herself and to everybody else that there’s some things that she can handle. So, this journey is definitely going to show me a lot of that. I feel like I’m on an endless journey of proving to myself what barriers I can break, what limits I can break for myself and I’m excited to put a little bit of that eagerness and drive and, like, almost a bit of stubbornness into Barbara’s character.

Grace even reacted to the reports saying the iconic J.K. Simmons might end up playing her dad, Commissioner James Gordon, in the upcoming movie.

She shared that she’s ready to learn a lot from him and even said, “I hope you’re my dad.”

As the storyline teased by Grace suggests, the movie might take on Batgirl’s early years of career.

Proving herself to her father, getting into the know-how of protecting Gotham, adapting to the responsibilities – basically, Barbara’s transformation from a novice to a fan-favorite, powerful superhero, might be what screenwriter Christina Hodson has in mind.

DC’s Batgirl is scheduled for a tentative 2022-2023 release.
