Every Variant of Doctor Strange We Spotted in the Multiverse of Madness

Now that we’re all officially into the Multiverse of Madness, it’s time for us to start analyzing (and over-analyzing) the content! Jokes apart, variants have become pretty cool these days, don’t you think? It’s only a matter of time until DC also comes up with something similar.

After watching the Multiverse of Madness, I was wondering how many variants of Stephen Strange did we actually see? To be honest, he did not have as many variants as I expected to see before the film released. But yet, there were a few.

So, I thought, how about listing them down for your convenience, just in case you’re trying to confirm your count. Here’s a list of every Doctor Strange variant I spotted in the Multiverse of Madness.

1. Stephen Strange

The OG Doctor Strange has an omniscient presence in the Multiverse of Madness. He is the Sorcerer Supreme and the Mystic of Arts. The Multiverse of Madness is the second film revolving around him after Doctor Strange (2016).

Benedict Cumberbatch has been universally loved as Doctor Strange since then. But just a tiny spoiler: when the movie begins, he isn’t really playing this version.

2. Sinister Strange

Sinister is a corrupted version of Doctor Strange. This variant appears on an Earth that has already befallen on an incursion. He looks pretty creepy if you ask me and rightly so, as his attire and vibe is supposed to match his personality.

There’s also a third eye in his portrait and he is mostly taken over by The Darkhold. This variant looks exactly like the original Strange, so he is played by Cumberbatch.

3. Defender Strange

This is the variant that appears in the beginning of the film, also played by Cumberbatch. Defender Strange is seen sporting a ponytail and wearing the classic typical costume of this variant from Matt Fraction’s Defenders run.

In the beginning, he was working with America Chavez but he didn’t make it alive out of the opening brawl.

4. 838 Strange

When Strange arrives at Earth-838, he discovers that in that Earth, he aka Stephen Strange died fighting Thanos and sacrificed himself to protect the universe. This variant of Strange first appears in the film as a statue.

Later, there’s also a flashback where we see that the Strange in that Earth was killed by Black Bolt after revealing to the Illuminati that he was taken over by the Darkhold. This variant looks a lot like the original classic Strange from the comic books.

5. Zombie Strange

Zombie Strange is not a typical variant of Doctor Strange since he does not look the same and is not played by Cumberbatch. He is not a different variant as such, but I am still going to include him because we’re including every possible option here.

Zombie Strange is basically OG Strange or 616 Strange (as per the film) when he was stuck in another universe but dream walked back into his own universe. But the only body that was present was the corpse of Defender Strange. So, 616 Strange becomes Zombie Strange.

6. Clea – Is she a variant?

Clea appeared in the mid-credit scene of Multiverse of Madness, played by Charlize Theron. She was seen demanding Strange’s help in the scene. There might be small chance that she is a variant of Doctor Strange, especially after what Marvel did with Loki.

With Loki, MCU put forward the possibility of variants being gender-fluid, since Lady Loki was one of the most prominent variants of Loki. But given the history of Clea in the Marvel comics, the possibility of her being a variant is unlikely. But with MCU, you never know!
