By my estimate, 2022 is going to be quite the year for Disney+ as it is expanding on both its original and other streaming content. Already it’s becoming a massive hub for franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, and I bet it’s only going to get bigger!
When it comes to new releases, I’ve made a list of all the shows and movies you simply cannot miss this year!
So here are the most anticipated new releases coming to Disney+ in 2022:
I. Moon Knight (March 30, 2022)
Meet Oscar Wilde as Steven Grant, a polite gift shop employee who due to having dissociative identity disorder unwittingly moonlights as a mercenary called Moon Knight. Experiencing blackouts and memories of another life, he slowly realizes he’s also become a conduit for the Egyptian god Khonshu.
II. Star Wars: The Bad Bunch S2 (Spring 2022)
The Clone Wars may be over but the Bad Bunch are sure to return. Disney has announced that the Clone Troopers will return with season 2 in Spring 2022. The new season will continue the adventures of Clone Force 99, who as we all know, were genetically engineered into becoming super soldiers.
III. Baymax! (2022)
I’m already predicting that Baymax! is going to be the most adorable and heartwarming show ever! The show will follow the robot as he goes about helping a new community of people.
Since the franchise had another TV show called Big Hero 6: The Series, it is yet unknown where exactly Baymax! picks up from and why the robot is without his usual gang. Guess we’ll figure out when the show premieres!
IV. Ms Marvel (Mid-2022)
Ms Marvel has gone through quite a few delays and its release date is yet TBA. Still, I can’t wait to see Marvel’s first Pakistani Muslim superhero, the 16-year-old Kamala Khan played Iman Vellani.
As you may guess, this Jersey City resident is a massive fan of Captain Marvel, and of course, the Avengers. If you enjoyed Hawkeye and are gearing up to see the next generation of Avengers, keep your eyes peeled for Ms Marvel!
V. Andor (2022)
You may have first seen Cassian Andor in Rogue One. Now Diego Luna will return to the role, in a prequel set six years before the film. The show will follow the rebel spy in his more formative years during the Rebellion.
This show is yet another one delayed by the pandemic, but like Luna says, it will be worth the wait since it truly unites old fans and new through the exploration of the events that led to Rogue One.
VI. The Mandalorian S3 (2022)
Fans have been waiting for the massively successful Mandalorian to return since 2020. The series will continue the story of bounty hunter Din Djarin who was hired by the Imperial forces to retrieve the child Grogu. Of course, the task does not go as planned.
Hold on to your hats a little long as season 3 will premiere in the second half of 2022. In the meantime, why not check out The Book of Boba Fett?
VII. Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Set ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, Ewan McGregor will once again helm the beloved role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s quite a turbulent time in Star Wars’ history, where Jedi hunters are all about and Kenobi has to look after and protect an infant Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.
Hayden Christensen will also reprise his role as Darth Vader, alongside a cast made up of Joel Edgerton, Kumail Nanjiani, Oshea Jackson Jr and Benny Safdie.
VIII. She-Hulk (2022)
Another one to get Marvel fans excited, Tatiana Maslany will play Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin. She is a lawyer who specializes in cases involving super humans and we soon learn, she too has the ability to turn into a hulk herself.
I’m super excited to see how her origin story will be explored, along with having Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth join the show. It is expected that She-Hulk will premiere after Moon Knight and Ms Marvel.
IX. Willow (2022)
This upcoming series is a sequel to the 1988 film of the same name. The movie followed the adventures of Warwick Davis’ Willow, who was tasked to protect an infant with a great destiny from the evil queen Bavmorda.
The TV series does not seem to be continuing the same storyline, as it is described that Willow will be hired by a princess who is looking to rescue her twin brother. Willow will be helped by a group of misfits who take on this new adventure with him.
X. High School Musical: The Series Season 3 (2022)
After the way HSM: The Series season 2 ended, there was no way we were not getting season 3! Season 2 was all rushed due to the pandemic, and hopefully season 3’s storyline will be better chalked out.
For newcomers who still don’t know anything about this series — HSM: The Series is about a high school who puts up a musical based on the poplar Disney film High School Musical, following it down to every character. But the actors face drama both on stage and off.
XI. The Old Man (2022)
Based on Thomas Perry’s novel, this thriller follows Dan Chase, a former intelligence officer who is living off the radar, only to find himself being targeted for an assassination. He is forced back into the dangerous world he left behind and has to uncover who’s out for his blood.
I. Cheaper by the Dozen (March 18, 2022)
The movie is a remake of the 1950 movie of the same name, that is loosely based on the Gilbreth family who had 12 kids. However, both the movies portray some kids to be from previous marriages.
In 2022 rendition, there seem to be only ten kids, unless there’s a twist waiting for us in the movie. But 10 or 12, the kids are as chaotic as ever — but they will discover what it means to be a real family, one funny problem at a time. The trailer is already shaping the movie to be quite entertaining, so I have high hopes for this one!
II. Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Another sequel comes our way with Hocus Pocus 2. This will directly follow the events of the first movie, with the witchy Sanderson sisters once again awakening in present-day Salem.
Fans of this cult classic will love to see how the sisters adjust to the “modern” world, and moreover how today’s teens will stop their devious plans before it’s too late. One last bait to rope you in? Billy Butcherson will also be back!
III. Disenchanted (2022)
Enchanted is one of the perfect princess movies to exist, even with all its quirky and cringy parts. So I’m really excited to see how the sequel will live up to it.
While there’s no trailer in sight yet, we do know that Disenchanted will take place 15 years after the original, with Maya Rudolph playing the new villain. After wishing their lives could be a “perfect fairytale,” Giselle’s casts a spell that backfires and she has only till midnight to undo it.
IV. Better Nate Than Ever (2022)
You may have heard of Better Nate Than Ever — it’s a 2013 novel by Tim Federle for middle graders. It’s about 13-year-old Nate, who sneaks away from his home in Pennsylvania to audition for ET: The Musical on Broadway. Feel free to go through the book while waiting for the movie’s official trailer.
Federle himself has written and directed this heartwarming movie and is known for writing for Broadway, films, and recently, TV via High School Musical: The Series.
V. Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again (2022)
While release details are still under wraps, this sequel will center around Larry’s son, Nick, who is hesitant to follow in his father’s footsteps as a nightwatchman. Of course, will end up taking the job, where Hank Azaria’s Kahmunrah (from Battle of the Smithsonian) will appear once again.
For returning characters you can expect Jedediah, Octavius, Teddy Roosevelt and Sacagawea with the new addition of Joan of Arc.
VI. Hollywood Stargirl (2022)
A sequel to Grace VanderWaal’s Stargirl, we will be introduced to next chapter of her life. Unlike the novel it’s based on, the sequel doesn’t seem to be following the story of Love, Stargirl.
Instead, Stargirl will set her sights on Hollywood, where she drives inspiration from her favorite musician (played by Uma Thurman.) Sadly, Leo won’t be making a return, but we’ll have plenty of new characters to keep us afloat!
