Disney’s reimagined live action of a classic favorite, Little Mermaid, released in theaters worldwide this Friday and dive-bombed into mixed reviews. But one thing all critics can agree on is that the cast did a phenomenal job bringing alive the beloved animated characters.
Halle Bailey’s Ariel, Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula, and Javier Bardem’s Triton were among those whose praise was sung, though the audience couldn’t overlook plot deviations and poor visual effects. The latter two spoke to THR before the global premiere and stated how happy they were to work on the same film together.
While praising each other’s work in The Little Mermaid, the two showed an interest in returning for a potential spinoff that could give Ursula and her rival sibling Triton more screen time. Read their comments below:
I had a moment where [Melissa] was delivering some pretty heavy lines, and they made my spine [shiver]. I felt the energy. So I didn’t see her Ursula until that moment, but I knew then that she had created a unique and iconic Ursula in this movie.

She’s brought everything that you can ask for and imagine. So, I need an Ursula spinoff, and since our characters are siblings, I want to have one scene with her while having dinner.
Any spinoffs or sequels of the live-action film will solely depend on the film’s box office earnings. Currently, the film is projected to hit the $100 million mark on its opening weekend in the United States, so things are looking good.
If an Ursula spinoff is greenlighted, it’d have to be a prequel detailing her relationship with her brother Triton and what made her turn against him and into the manipulative witch she is in The Little Mermaid.
Triton & Ursula weren’t siblings in the original, marking their familial relationship a significant change to the actual plot. If McCarthy’s as terrific at the role as the trailers suggest, I’d be willing to see her embody the villainess again. My tickets for The Little Mermaid are booked, so I’d suggest you do the same and fast!
