The Mandalorian EPs Discuss whether Luke Skywalker Was a True Jedi or Not

Grogu spent a big chunk of his time in season 2 of The Mandalorian training with Luke Skywalker as a Jedi who can wield the Force. But after the Empire wiped away the Jedi Order, the old rituals and the traditional training processes were lost.

Even though Jedis, like Luke Skywalker and Ezra Bridger, rose after that trying time, a question of their status’s validity arises. While debating whether Grogu will become a Jedi after his training in The Mandalorian, the show’s executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni shifted their focus to Grogu’s master.

In the interview with ScreenRant, Filoni raised the opinion that being a “Jedi is a way of training” and “a way of philosophy and being.” when discussing Grogu’s status. Favreau quickly stated Grogu was training with a Jedi, which led them to turn the question on Luke Skywalker. You can read the transcription of their interview below:

Dave Filoni: The interesting question is how you define when someone is a Jedi. That’s the real question because the Jedi is a way of training. It’s a way of philosophy and being.

Jon Favreau: Well, Grogu trained with a Jedi.

Dave Filoni: [Grogu] trained when he was young, and [so did] Luke. Yoda didn’t confirm that he was a Jedi, remember? He says, “Oh, you think you’re a Jedi? Not so fast.” He had to pass the trials.

Jon Favreau: But he also said, “You’ll be the last Jedi when I’m gone.”

Dave Filoni: That’s interesting. We’ve seen a few more pop up.

While Filoni is not entirely sold on the idea of Luke being the only Jedi after Yoda, when Favreau points out Yoda’s last words, he doesn’t pinpoint the answer to the main question: Is Luke Skywalker a true Jedi?

Luke began training under Obi-Wan and then went under Yoda’s wing, but his training started relatively late. His emotions ruled his will over the force, and he didn’t go through the same trials and tests to acquire the title of a Jedi master.

But I believe Filoni may have answered in Luke’s favor since he made the point that a Jedi transcends training, as it is a way of philosophy and being. During Grogu’s training, it’s easy to notice Luke holds the same ideals and principles in place as a Jedi master, thus making it impossible to question the validity of his title.

Even Ahsoka Tano never completed her training, but no one in the Star Wars galaxy questions her status as a Jedi. So, it’s safe to say Luke Skywalker is a true Jedi, and thus so will Grogu.

The new season of The Mandalorian will focus on Grogu’s growing powers, and it’ll be exciting to see him take the necessary steps to become a Jedi. New episodes of season 3 will be available to stream on Disney+ every Wednesday, so make sure to stay tuned for more.
