Matthew McConaughey Considering a Run for Texas Governor

Matthew McConaughey has declared he is “seriously considering” a run for Texas governor. Making the statement during a podcast, the Oscar-winning actor did not disclose the political party of his choice but shared reasons for wanting to enter politics.

On Wednesday, the actor disclosed his motive for a recent Crime Stoppers of Houston‘s podcast The Balanced Voice. He explained to the host, Rania Mankarious, why running for governor was a “true consideration.”

“I’m looking into [running for governor] now again; what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?”

This isn’t the first time the 51-year-old actor has talked about the idea. McConaughey was invited to The Joe Rogan Experience in October 2020, where he talked about topics incorporating being a Christian in Hollywood and defunding the police. He also mentioned that some Hollywood liberals went too far left while talking about his religion.

In November 2020, when he was asked by the conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt whether he would consider a bid, he replied, “It would be up to the people more than it would be.” He called politics a “broken business” and said it would only garner more interest when it “redefines its purpose.”

Despite not sharing any explicit affiliation to a political party, McConaughey’s views on gun violence, police defunding, and the ongoing pandemic give us a hint.

While discussing defunding the police, McConaughey replied quite carefully saying,

“It’s almost like it should have been renamed because ‘defund’ does not sound anything like there’s been money reallocated to different areas of handling some police exercise.”

“The community and the police need to get back together, and the community needs to say, ‘Here’s what’s unfair. Here’s how I feel it’s unfair as a Black man or a person of color or whatever the situation. Here’s my problem with my relationship with you as cops.”

During the pandemic, McConaughey filmed pro-mask PSAs and interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci (an American physician-scientist and immunologist) on Instagram. Similarly, in an interview with Jesse Will for Men’s Journal, he complained how politicized mask-wearing had been by both sides of the spectrum.

It will be exciting to see which side of the American politics McConaughey gets on when Texas elects its new mayor during Thanksgiving 2022. Incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott will be running for re-election to a third term in office this year.
