Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: More Wakanda, Says M’Baku Actor

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as the title suggests, will focus more on the country and the various main characters residing there, claims M’Baku actor Winston Duke.

The upcoming MCU film, releasing theatrically on November 11, 2022, will explore the country more deeply than the first. After the passing of Chadwick Boseman, who played King T’Challa/Black Panther in the first installment, director Ryan Coogler decided to focus on other major Wakandan characters instead of quickly replacing Boseman.

The first trailer for the sequel was released at SDCC 2022 by a tearful cast, the trailer as moving as the cast’s hug without Boseman. The D23 Expo also released footage highlighting Wakanda’s fight against the world, grieving its King’s death, and handling its secret existence being outed to the world.

Both the trailer and the exclusive footage at the Disney event also focused on yet another battle that Wakanda must fight in the upcoming film in the wake of everything else, one with Namor the Submariner (Tenoch Huerta).

Speaking with Marvel on the way to the D23 Expo panel, Winston Duke shared a little about the role of his character M’Baku in the upcoming film. The actor also shared that more of Wakanda will be explored in the sequel.

[M’Baku] is no longer the insular leader, and he’s learning how to move forward. So, he has a wide macro lens as to what’s happening, and I think we get to see more of it and how much that impacts him. What I’m most excited for fans to see is how much more Wakanda there is. There’s just so much more than the first movie, and that’s exciting.

Black Panther (2018) focused more on T’Challa and his superhero persona but had set up the ways of the African country and its community well enough. The sequel will focus on exploring Wakanda with a much wider range of characters and how Wakanda plays an important role in the MCU.

The broader approach will give major characters, like M’Baku himself, a better stage to flesh out the depths of their characters. The upcoming film’s current focus on Wakanda will give more plot points that can be explored in future projects.
