MCU’S New Captain America In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s premiere episode revealed the next Captain America. But, it isn’t Bucky Barnes, aka. Winter Soldier or Sam Wilson, aka. Falcon. Featured in the trailers, a new character has ascended the role of Captain America, one who has yet to be introduced to the MCU.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from The Falcon And The Winter Soldier.

Revealed only in the final moments of the episode, not much is known about this character yet. Even though his name wasn’t announced, he was introduced as the new Captain America to the roaring crowds in a publicity stunt by the government. However, longtime fans and enthusiasts of the Marvel comics know that it is none other than U.S. agent John Walker.

Played by Wyatt Russell, Walker’s introduction could have serious consequences for both Sam and Bucky, dismantling their faith as they- for now- have turned their backs on continuing Rogers’ legacy. Walker’s presence could also have a larger effect on the MCU’s future if the franchise plans for the character to stick around even after Falcon & Winter Soldier, specifically with his personality and plot from the comics.

John Walker first appeared in 1986’s Captain America #323, playing a villain called Super-Patriot. Creator Mark Gruenwald initially wanted a foil to Steve Rogers, someone who could show the flip side of being patriotic for the wrong reasons. Though Walker retired as a villain, he was later brought back as the new Captain America after Steve Rogers’ departure, same as the MCU story.

Unlike his contemporary, Walker is known to be aggressive and more temperamental, sometimes even injuring his opponents. Lacking Steve’s compassion and cool-headedness, Walker has a hard time fitting his role.

How the U.S. Agent’s introduction could affect Sam and Bucky is another aspect. Rogers passed down the shield to Sam at the end of Avengers: Endgame. But ever since that moment, Sam’s marked refusal to accept the role as anyone’s but Rogers is very crucial to the plot of Falcon & Winter Soldier.

As an opposing figure to Rogers’ values and morals, it’ll definitely be interesting to see whether Sam & Bucky come head-to-head with Captain America John Walker or not.
