Michael Vs. Tommy: Who’ll Kill Who In Season?

When the question of Black Cat’s identity arose, all fingers pointed towards Micheal Gray and his wife, Gina in Peaky Blinders season 5. (For valid reasons, I assure you.)

But while our suspicions remain to be proven, it’s not hard to tell that Micheal is trudging on dangerously thin ice with Tommy.

As if his willingness to betray Tommy wasn’t enough, the kid had the audacity to suggest that Tommy retire and hand over the family business to him — funniest scene in the entire show, hands down.

But now that Finn Cole’s (Micheal Gray) return has been confirmed for season 6, many wonder if Tommy will finally put a bullet through the lad’s head.

Steven Knight (screenwriter) hinted that Tommy will kill Micheal in season 6 as an act of revenge for his betrayal – that is, if Micheal doesn’t kill Tommy first. Micheal might be exposed as the Black Cat and betray Tommy again, leading to his death.

Normally, I wouldn’t take this as confirmation. But let’s be real, with all that sh*t Micheal tried to pull, this was long coming.

Of course, we can theorize that Micheal redeems himself somehow and ultimately ends up siding with the Shelbys. But the chances of that happening seem very unlikely, especially with Gina whispering ideas into Micheal’s ears.

I’ve always preferred John over Michael. Only if I could turn back time and make the screenwriters kill Michael instead of Michael during the Italian ambush! For now, it’s pretty obvious that the two are going to go after each other’s blood.

1. What happened between Tommy and Michael?

In season 4, Tommy was upset that Micheal didn’t warn him about the set-up with Luca and was willing to let him die. Later in season 5, Micheal tried to force Tommy into handing over the family business to him. When Tom rebuked the idea, he threatened to do it ‘with or without support.’

This move marked Michael as the secondary antagonist of the show and sparked the idea that he could be Black Cat. After all, no one in the family has a stronger incentive to see Tommy fall than Michael and Gina.

2. So, Who Dies In Season 6?

Tommy and Polly Gray

Steven Knight hinted that Tommy might die in Peaky Blinders season 6 in an act of redemption, bringing his story to a full circle. Another character that could die is Aunt Polly, due to the unfortunate and unexpected death of Helen McCrory (the actress who played Polly).

The production team still hasn’t confirmed if Helen shot any scenes for the show’s last season. And if not, they would likely explain her absence with an off-screen death. Won’t lie; just the idea of this hurts. Polly was one of the best characters in the show, and Helen was nothing short of perfection. I’ll miss her.

As for dear ol’ Tommy, there are several reasons why he could die. And the most important one is that his death will bring completion to the show.

I know, for once, it’d be good to see a character get a happy ending. But Tommy isn’t “happy ending” material — his story is stark and painful, and redemption is the closest to a happy ending he can get.

Steven Knight, screenwriter of the show, agrees. In a Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, the screenwriter explained why he felt Tommy couldn’t be happy:

“His [Tommy’s] arc on the show is meant to be one of torture. The intention is to give Tommy Shelby redemption. That will be a happy ending.”

Pretty sure ‘redemption’ in Tommy’s case will equal death in sacrifice to protect his children or family.
