Moon Knight Embraces Chaos as His Dark Reality Unravels in New Trailer

Disney+ revealed the official first trailer for Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated thrilling new series Moon Knight.

The trailer was released along with the series’ poster revealing the premiere date during NFL Super Wild Card Halftime between the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams.

As soon as the clip begins, it’s hard not to notice the tone being grittier and darker than Marvel’s usually bright and colorful themes.

(One might almost double-check if they’ve clicked on a DC trailer instead.)

With Kid Cudi’s Day ‘N’ Nite playing in the back, the trailer begins with Oscar Isaac’s character looking distressed as he takes extra precautions to lock his doors and tie his leg to the bed. He states that he’s failing to distinguish between dreams and reality—the next moment, he’s flat on his face trying to run out of bed.

He has a shabby yet sincere look as he rushes to go to work. However, we soon realize it’s Steven Grant, a meek gift-shop employee (but a millionaire in the comics) who has taken over, instead of Marc Spector, the mercenary.

Steven’s delusions/visions get stronger as the lines between his realities blur even further when he gets a call from someone named Layla, and she calls him by his real name. To which he questions her, “Why did you call me Marc?”

Cut to Ethan Hawke’s villain giving major Loki vibes as a whole crowd kneels in front of him. He is a cult leader, and thanks to the closed captions, the name displayed reads Arthur Harrow, a surgeon and scientist in the comics.

Call it Steven/Marc’s descent into madness, if you will, but as the trailer progresses, we see him “embrace the chaos” and transform into Moon Knight as the hero beats someone, probably to death, in a bathroom.

As Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with Marc, he makes his way to Egypt and the pyramids. Moon Knight is the Egyptian Moon god Khonshu’s fist and high priest.

Not to read too much into the text, but as the series’ official description mentions “deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt,” chances are Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead, will make an appearance as well.

Some fans have also speculated that the person he’s beating up in the bathroom is none other than Anubis himself. It’s either him or a werewolf. As Werewolf by Night has been rumored to appear, it wouldn’t be too shocking.

Midnight Man and Dracula might also appear, with the series connecting to Mahershala Ali’s Blade as well. And although you ought to take these speculations with a grain of salt, it looks like Marvel might be setting the scene for the Midnight Sons.

Meanwhile, the poster shows a close-up look at Moon Knight’s arms and his moon-shaped comic-accurate weapon known as the Crescent Darts. A type of Shuriken made of Adamantium with its design intended to reflect the shape of the Gibbous moon.

Marvel also announced the release date for Moon Knight, slating its premiere on Disney+ for March 30.
