The new Mortal Kombat (2021) movie has all sorts of brutal fights and gory Fatalities to satisfy the original video game fans. The film included some fan-favorite signature moves and kills. However, they wouldn’t be the same without the amazing sound effects.
In a new behind-the-scenes video, Mortal Kombat’s foley artist Adrian Medhurst and sound designers Robert Mackenzie and James Ashton explain to Insider what went into producing the film’s gory sounds.
One of the examples was how Medhurst used the sounds of crushing/snapping celery and bell peppers along with grinding wet gravel in his hands for the scene where Mileena unhinges her jaw to reveal her full set of teeth.
Robert Mackenziesaid that very few noises in the movie were taken from the already existing digital library and that most of them were created by the foley artist. Various scratching metals were used to produce the sounds for the unique weapons used in the film.
For the gruesome kills like Nitara and Reiko’s deaths, Medhurst used things like wet noodles, newspaper mâché, and melons to get the right effects. He squished the materials, stomped on them, and smashed them with a hammerto get the desired sounds. To amplify the quality, a slithering octopus noise was added during the sound mixing process.
In the video, foley artist Adrian Medhurst also mentions that Mortal combat is one of the most goriest films he’s ever worked on. Mortal Kombat is available to stream on HBO Max. Dare to watch it if you can handle the extremely gory Fatalities.
