Masters Of The Universe Part 2 Tries To Please Fans But Fails

Masters of the Universe: Revelation is back part two. The plotline seems to make peace with problems faced in Part 1. But the attempt ultimately falls short.

Although there was a lot of anticipation for the reboot, Part 1 of Masters of the Universe: Revelation got review bombed. The main aspect that disappointed fans was that the marketing had pointed to He-Man having a huge role in the series.

However, in a rather daring storyline, He-Man was killed in the first episode itself. The remaining episodes of Part 1 focus on Teela and her journey of accepting her heritage as a Sorcerer’s daughter.

When Part 2’s trailer came out, it almost seemed like creator Kevin Smith had paid heed to these responses. The trailer itself showed that He-Man was resurrected, got his powers back, and would once again battle Skeletor.

But Smith clarifies that the decision to kill off He-Man and bring him back was always the original plan. Besides, the animation was ready even before Part 1 aired.

Smith’s main aim was to explore what a world without He-Man would look like, to emphasize how important his presence is.

Now looking back, the creator’s only regret is releasing the series in two parts. Although he thought this would give fans an opportunity to explore a He-Man-less narrative, the backlash was too severe to allow for such an experiment.

Still, the back and forth with He-Man’s death causes emotional discrepancies within the expanse of the ten episodes. With the focus shifted to Teela, then back to Prince Adam/He-Man, sometimes it felt like the show did not know whose arc to follow.

Teela, who was against the He-Man gallantry and use of magic, definitely did a 180 in Part 2, where she started supporting Adam and accepted magic. If there was a build-up to this character change, it certainly was subtle.

Fans who watch Part 2 might appreciate that it “rectifies” what they were bitter about in Part 1. There’s plenty of thunderous He-Man-Skeletor fighting and an ultimate showdown against Evil-Lyn.

But whether this is enough to carry the series forward is still highly doubtful.
