Neil Gaiman’s Dead Boy Detectives Has An HBO Max Pilot Order

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s works may stand a chance to see yet another come to life: Dead Boy Detectives is rumored to have a pilot episode ordered by HBO Max.

The DC comic series is about the ghosts of two children, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, who refuse to let go of their Earthly bonds and enter the afterlife peacefully.

Instead, they stay back to solve any strange, supernatural mystery and crime that comes their way.

Their first appearance was in 1991’s The Sandman #25.

Variety was first to break the news from exclusive sources, however, both HBO Max and WBTV have refrained from commenting.

Names tied to the project are Steve Yockey who will be writing and co-executively producing with Jeremy Carver. Under the Berlanti Productions banner, we have Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Dave Madden. Warner Bro Television serves as the studio.

The pilot episode will be one hour long and filming is said to begin in November, this year. No pilot director has yet been named.

Before we see Charles and Edwin in the Dead Boy Detectives pilot episode, we will be meeting them in Doom Patrol’s upcoming Season 3 (Sep 23), played by Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant.

The actors are not tied to playing the characters on Dead Boy Detectives (yet). While the characters’ involvement in Doom Patrol could be an introduction to the Dead Boy Detectives, it could very well be that both shows are independent of each other.

Carver who is helming both Doom Patrol and Dead Boy Detectives is a great bridge to have. Berlanti Studios which also handles Doom Patrol and Titans, is an apt choice for this upcoming DC title.

Gaiman himself is having a good streak with his works on screen recently — Lucifer’s befitting final season, the on-air American Gods, adaptions of The Sandman and Anansi Boys, and the second season of Good Omens.

We’ll be more than delighted if Dead Boy Detectives makes a confirmed entry to this list!
