Conflicting Case of Billy Milligan Explored In Netflix’ Crime Series

In its newest crime mini-series, Netflix pries open the case of Billy Milligan who pleaded insanity in his multiple-felony charge, including three reported rapes and armed robbery.

In 1975, Billy Milligan was arrested for rape and armed robbery. Two years later in 1977, he was let go on parole but had to register himself as a sex offender. In the same year, he was again arrested for three reported cases of rape.

In court, the defense pleaded insanity stating the crimes were committed by one of Milligan’s dissociative personalities and he had no memory of it.

Mulligan became the first person diagnosed to use Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) as a defense. Despite the high-levelled felony, his insanity please allowed him to walk scot-free, only spending a decade in state-run mental hospitals. 

Over time, Milligan would be revealed possessing 24 different personalities, starting with three personalities at the age of five. Psychologists at the time claimed the ailment erupted due to his abusive childhood.

True crime fans will have a chance of diving deep into Milligan’s case that had the nation spilt over the truth.

Was Milligan really unaware of the crimes he had committed, or as the trailer puts it, should he have been given an Academy Award for the act he put on?

But there is much to unpack given that the series deals with mental illnesses which still receives disarrayed results in the court of law. In the case of dissociative personality, it is conflicting to identify how justice should be doled out.

Directed by Olivier Megaton, the series will have Milligan’s real interrogation footage, a series of interviews from his family in the current day, as well as insights shared by friends, doctors and law enforcers — all who continue to have spilt opinions.

In 2014, Milligan passed away due to cancer. But the mystery of his misdeeds will continue to haunt those who want a clear-cut answer. The miniseries will be premiere on Netflix on September 22.
