It is based on the anime series of the same name by Hajime Yatate.

The show is styled on Hollywood Westerns fused with sci-fi elements, complemented by its camera angles and the anime’s iconic opening track “Tank!”

The trailer quickly introduces the basic background of Cowboy Bebop: there’s no winning in this world. If you’re not already tackled down by cops or other bounty hunters, the crime syndicate will surely get you.

Spike Spiegel decides that the best (or at least a decent) way of getting by is to be a bounty hunter himself. The show will depict how he joins forces with Jet Black and Faye Valentine.

Of course, the team is not meant to be perfect, what with Spike constantly bickering with Faye, Faye trying to run away with their money, and Jet Black trying to spend just a single day not being the peacemaker.

In the anime, Spike’s past is not dwelled on as a single-season arc, which helped to keep the mystery alive during its long run. Contrary to that, the Netflix show does seem to make it a central point to the story.

We do not see any great shots of the villain incarnate, Vicious. But if you look closely, there is a zoomed-out fight scene between Spike and a white-haired man. And we all know who that is!

The development for the live-action has been active since 2018. As with all anime adaptations, the news was met with a lot of skepticism. After watching the official trailer, fans are ready to give Cowboy Bebop a chance, especially noting the intentional use of a B-Grade movie tone.

Plus, the CGI is quite commendable. Hopefully, fans may enjoy the 10-episode show as an independent watch. In Spike’s own words: Whatever happens, happens.

(But we are still making a petition about having Ed included, right?)

In the meantime, you can get a taste of what’s to come via a standalone “presentation” of Cowboy Bebop. Disclaimer: none of the scenes are from the actual show. But oh, what a watch!
