Uncoupled Review: Netflix’s Latest Comedy Show Is Funny, Emotional, Entertaining

Neil Patrick Harris is back on our screens and is as charming as ever. This time his character is more refreshing and profound than his legendary Barney Stinson. But is the slice-of-life comedy about a middle-aged single gay man charming enough for you to binge it? Let’s find out.

1. Quick Review

Uncoupled as a story is in some ways fresh and in some ways a cliché. The writing and performances quite seamlessly induce emotions of joy, happiness, sadness, and even melancholy.

However, some bits seem to follow the done and dusted stereotypes of the homosexual community. But despite this, the overall narrative and screenplay make up for a light-hearted watch.

2. Is it worth watching?

Uncoupled is definitely worth a watch. Fans of the actor would love to see his new avatar that is pretty mature. The writing gets stronger with each episode, and the balance between comedy and other hard-hitting emotions is well-maintained.

Think of Uncoupled as a much toned-down version of After Life. While the latter gets truly depressing, this show touches upon the woes of relationships, breakups, and more, in a heartwarming manner.

Fans and non-fans of the actor would like this show if they’re looking for a funny, emotional, and relatable story. But before you close this tab and switch to Netflix to watch the show, there are a couple of things for you to know.

3. Plot

Uncoupled follows the story of a 40-year-old gay man who just got out of a 17-year-old relationship and is trying to cope with the break while trying to date new people. Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) had always believed that Colin (Tuc Watkins) was his soulmate.

But just before Colin’s 50th birthday, Colin decides to leave Michael, and the two go their separate ways. Michael, who is visibly shattered, is supported by his friends and colleagues as they help him find love once again.

After multiple failed dates, Michael wonders if there’s really anyone out there for him. The answer to this and perhaps a lot more is Uncoupled’s story.

4. Cast and Characters

Neil Patrick Harris stars in the lead role as a real estate agent. The supporting cast includes Tisha Campbell as Suzanne, Brooks Ashmanskas as Stanley, Emerson Brooks as Billy, and Marcia Gay Harden as Claire. Besides these, there are multiple cameos for people Michael hooks up with.

While Neil Patrick Harris is as charming as ever, he also adds a significant amount of innocence to his character. As a 40-year-old gay man, he doesn’t know how dating works for the new generation.

The supporting cast is fabulous, and their comic timing is nearly perfect. In fact, in certain scenes, they even supersede the protagonist in terms of screen presence.

The writers have also given Claire a significant role. She balances the humor by being the person who makes Michael stop, think, and reflect for a few moments. Overall, the complete ensemble comes together really well, and each character fits into the screenplay perfectly.
