Originating in the 1970s, Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that is still popular among audiences. Played by more than 40 million people, it continues to be live-streamed across the Internet.

The game, which has been adapted into many movies and animated series, is owned by Wizards of the Coast, a subdivision of Hasbro, since 1997. However, none of the movies or series has been too successful. The project, which many directors and writers have picked up, finally chose filmmaking duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who have previously worked together on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Game Night.

Even though plot details haven’t been revealed yet, Deadline reports that Grant will play a character called Forge Fletcher, and Lillis will be portraying a character called Doric. Together with Rodriguez, Smith, Page, and Lillis, Pine and co. could form the film’s party of adventurers, which usually includes 4-5 people in the game.

A script written earlier for the movie teases the group venturing off to find the Eye of Vecna, a terrifying yet famous relic from the game. Focusing on such adventurous treasure-hunting themes, the game serves fantastic inspiration to take from for box office hits.

Hugh Grant, who is renowned for his roles in romantic comedies such as Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary, has recently garnered additional accolades for playing a character accused of murder in HBO’s The Undoing. However, Dungeons & Dragons, which walks more on the lines of adventure-comedy, might bring in some new results, much to the surprise of audiences.

Dungeons & Dragons is scheduled to come out on May 27, 2022.
