Shang-Chi Toys Reveal How the MCU is Changing Ten Rings of Power

New toys for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings reveal how the MCU has changed Mandarin’s Ten Rings of Power. The upcoming Marvel movie was first announced at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, with Simu Liu being confirmed for the lead role.

Now, as it approaches its release date, promotions have begun for the movie. Among them are the toys released by Hasbro, which show the changes made to Mandarin’s powers.

The first toy depicts Wenwu in the middle of a “Ten Rings Power Attack!” according to the packaging. His arms seem to be covered in ice, showing that the arm bands possess the same powers as the rings in the comics.

Furthermore, there is also a “Legend of the Ten Rings Blaster,” which kids can wear as a gauntlet to shoot blue disks.

Earlier this week, Marvel Entertainment dropped the official teaser for the upcoming Phase Four movie, which garnered an overwhelmingly positive reaction from fans. Even though Shang-Chi has been a longtime Marvel Comics character, this will be his debut in the MCU. Check out the teaser here:

The teaser also introduces Wenwu, aka. Mandarin (Tony Leung), as Shang-Chi’s father, taking over from Fu Manchu in the comics. The Mandarin is renowned for his ten rings which give him many powers.

Similar to Shang-Chi’s origins, the MCU seems to have updated the Mandarin’s weapon as well. In the teaser, the rings have been replaced by arm bands.

Wenwu is highlighted throughout the teaser but his action sequences steal the show. However, none of them portray the proper usage of the arm bands.

In the comics each of the Ten Rings harness different powers from manipulating matter to shooting beams and many other deadly abilities.

One of them can also indeed project waves of ice, trapping enemies in intense cold sheaths which is what probably inspired the toy manufacturing company to base the action figurine on.

But, whether the MCU restricts the Mandarin’s powers to simply icing his enemies remains to be seen.

The reason behind the change remains unclear, but it will be interesting to see how Wenwu wields the bands’ powers in the movie. He will be leading the terrorist organization that was first teased in Iron Man, and the Ten Rings will play a major role in Shang-Chi.

However, the movie will not be directly adapting his narrative from the comics, so there are bound to be some changes and twists in the story ahead.

Shang-Chi was supposed to have an early 2021 release, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, schedules had to be pushed back considerably. The movie is currently slated for a September premiere.
