What a tumultuous ride Episode 5 was! From Jan trying to entice Charles back into their relationship to Oliver tragically figuring out that Will is not his biological child, the season was taken to another level.
But with all these major reveals, it was two unrelated details that caught fans’ attention, snowballing into a theory.
From the events of Only Murders in the Building S2 Ep 5, fans have theorized that Alice could be the daughter of Marv, one of the podcast superfans.
I know, I know—the speculations seem completely wild. What could possibly link the two together? But if you have already heard whispers of this theory and it has piqued your curiosity, I’ll explain it in detail!
As we know, at the beginning of the episode, Alice became quite a viable suspect, especially when Jan pointed out that the killer could be an artist. While Mabel tries to defend her, Oliver puts her to the test using the party game, Son of Sam.
Oliver finds out that Alice is indeed hiding something, but it’s not what they expect—Alice reveals that she has been faking her whole identity and reputation. She’s actually the daughter of a poor British plumber.
“You know, I think I know about those passageways. I do mold removal in the building […] You know, my daughter came out recently, and I was so proud. She says I’m dead to her, but could a dead man “like” a Facebook post?”
Marv, Only Murders In The Building
Now right at the beginning of the episode as well, when the podcast trio is dining at the cafe, one of their superfans, Marv, has a very important dialogue that almost goes unnoticed.
The first point is about the Arcatacombs, where he said he knows information about the underground tunnels because he used to treat the mold there. This in itself is quite suspicious, as the killer, too, has an intricate knowledge of the Arcatacombs.
In his next (and rather unnecessary) comment he talks about his queer daughter who has just come out. This is the link that made fans think that Alice is actually Marv’s daughter! Alice has already lied enough, so she could’ve easily lied about her nationality or/and her father’s profession. (Or, that Marv changed his field later.)
Contesting this theory is of course up to you. It is possible they have nothing in common and this tiny “coincidence” is nothing other than that. Still, it would be pretty cool if it does end up being true—especially because we’ve uncovered more of Alice’s unhinged side in Ep 6.
